And I think I know why that is.
It all stems from our school days. Those legendary words that are said in every school before every sports day. "It's not the winning, it's the taking part."
Utter bollards.
Sports day is like a physical exam. Before a maths GCSE does the invigilator bloke say "Now listen kids, don't worry if you don't know the answers, it's the taking the exam that counts, not the number of marks you get"? Of course he doesn't!
So why are kids told, effectively, not to bother trying their best on sports day? They are basically told, it doesn't matter if you win or if you come last. Hardly going to get them doing their best, is it?
Who cares if the fat boy gets upset because he comes last? He'll probably get top marks in something else anyway, so what's the probelm? No one is going to be good at everything, so why not give those that are good at sports the chance to show it, and then recognise that acheivement.
Before any of you say anything, I was never particularly sporty at school either.
Moving on from that point, why do they give out medals for the top three people at an event? Who wants to celebrate the fact that there are two people better than them? I wouldn't. All or nothing. What's second or third place? There's still someone out there better than you. Why would you want to celebrate that fact?
Getting back on track, I think we need to be more like America (You don't know how difficult it was for me to type that) in regard to our sports. We should encourage a competitve attitude, not suppress one. Encourage kids to try and run faster than their mates, to jump further or whatever.
When we get kids WANTING to win, then we may have a chance of getting somewhere on the world stage when it comes to sporting events.
Thoughts?

I'm Scottish too. Anyway, we are still good at snooker. AND, we are kinda crap at other sports too.
I still say its nothing to be proud of. A drubbing ? Unlucky more like...but we can't admit they were unlucky 'cause we won. As for being proud...is our country so sad and desperate that all we've got an excuse to fly a flag for or be proud in is a team of overpaid, whining, largely immature "sportsmen" who kick a ball around for under 2 hours and get paid handsomely for doing it ? Oh yeah, yay England, yay us...... I think not.
We're rubbish, that's a fact.

I disagree, it's not like it's some age old result, it's fairly recent. And it's not just a win, it's what is known in the profession as a drubbing. We didn't just "beat" one of the best teams in the world, we destroyed them, and it was an away result as well.
>(Germany 1-5 England if memory serves - which it does)
Lol ! Not this again ! I can imagine the scene in the future...World Cup 3002 and England lose again, and everyone ill be saying "We beat Germany 5-1 once yknow, we rock !!!"
We beat a good team, once. it's nothing to be proud of.

I watched 30 kids (both girls and boys) playing football in a sports hall the other day and I thought: "How plop". 15 aside hardly encourages team play and tactics.
Sport isn't given enough priority in this country (just look at the National Stadium fiasco) and we have too many social barriers in place to prevent success.
Tennis, golf, horse riding, motor racing etc are all expensive sports that many cannot play.
Football is cheap to play but we are still stuck in the "we know best Island mentality". We think that our style of play is good, yet we look rubbish when we play almost every other team. We may well win a good few but this isn't the way forward, as we will never win another major tournament with "110% commitment".
No offence meant by the next statment but our MP for Sport is/was a women. She couldn't even name the England team. The previous bloke or new bloke (I'm not sure who is previous or current- does anyone?) knew even less. You cannot make token appointments and then let our representatives embarass us in this way....
I can't imagine the South Africans or Australians doing such a thing.

Does anyone care about snooker?
Does anyone care if we're part of Britain?
Does anyone care if anyone thought of Scotland?
(I'm Scottish, but I'm just doing to you what you do to everything else.)
England is one of the top 10 footblling nations in the world
England is one of the top 10 rugby nations in the world
Wales frequently produces champion darts players
Both england and scotland frequently produce class act snooker players
At every Olympic games, we come home with medals, especially in sports like rowing, where we are among the finest in the world.
Just because we aren't the BEST in the world, isn't to say we're crap. A nation that has won the FIFA World Cup, and has come fairly close to winning it on a few other occasions can hardly be said to be crap. Don'y forget that finalists Germany were pummelled by an impressive England team (Germany 1-5 England if memory serves - which it does) in the qualifiers. We are quite deservedly reputed as one of the most capable footballing teams in the world, just because we don't win everything, doesn't mean we suck.
Sport is about taking part.
