I am to be honest. The criteria for European funding was that you were made redundant up to 12 months ago. I was made redundant 18 months ago but they gave it to me anyway!

Expect many progress reports and requests for help...!

Well me.. I was made redundant last year and recently got in touch with a company called Computeach (www.computeach.co.uk). They arranged a visit and showed me the variety of courses I could take. There are 4 or 5 courses including the SCP and MCSA etc etc. They asked me about my background and stuff and we decided the most suitable course would be the SCP in Java. I contacted my local authority for redundancy funding and I'm just in the process of sending my application off to them.

If everything goes ok I should be starting my course at the end of August. Its a home based course all you need is a half decent pc and a web connection. You have 6 or 7 'away days' at Computeach hq to prepare you for exams and help you find decent work too.

Well I studied my Computing degree about 5 years ago now. Since then I've been bumming around in various jobs and now I've decided to back to what I was good at. Work wise not having moved in IT circles that much since graduating I'm looking at using the SCD to make up for my lack of experience and to bring me up to speed with whats going on. Having programmed in VB, Pascal, Cobol, C, C++ blah blah blah I'm hoping that all my knowledge will come flooding back to me. I've dug out all my old course notes and looking through them at the moment.

What do you think I should be concentrating on before starting? At the moment Pascal is top of my priorities cos in order to be exept from stages 1 and 2 of the SCD I need to get up to speed.. but after that?

I should be starting by the end of August - I'm getting funding to do it as I was made redundant last year.. big bonus!

I program java amongst other things in the office, so it's probably easier than if I had to sit down and learn it myself. I know people who have studied and passed it from scratch in about 4 months. Others a lot longer. I'm not in any hurry to pass it, to be honest, although I would love it for my CV. I rate professional qualifications pretty high.

It also depends on your background. I've been programming in VB for years so I would look at problems from a procedureal point of view. Although I did OO design at uni it took me a while to get back into that way of thinking. I was doing my head in there for a while.

What about you? When you starting it? Are you putting yourself through it, or is it sponsered? Let us know how you're getting on.
