Do you remember quite a few years ago, the powers that be would have us believe that at the begining of this century every one would be prancing around their bedrooms, acting like the worst mime artist in the world, wearing a poncy looking helmet that weighed aproximately the same as a large cow and wearing Michael Jackson style black gloves? All in the name of gaming.

I am talking of course about the 'Virtual Reality' gaming boom of the 90's. Where has it gone?

Has it indeed integrated into our consoles, and computers, in the guise of the many first person perspective games that are now available? Is this just a watered down version of the 'hyper reality' that we were all promised, or just a pale imitation?

And what of the helmet, and gloves, that were such an integral part of the experience? Have these been replaced by the wheels, and guns and the many attachments that are now available for every format, allowing us to be that little bit more in control?

Or perhaps it was just a little too 'Real' for our taste. Perhaps the whole experience was detrimental to the escapism that we seek in our gaming. After all, no-one really wants to be trasported to the middle of a bloody conflict or find themselves on the run from an entire city police department. They just wish to taste what it feels like without feeling any consequences. Perhaps placing you right in the middle of these scenarios wasn't such a good idea mentaly?

After all it is far easier to just look away from the screen than to remove a helmet. Are we just not ready for it yet? Wouldn't we rather stay slightly detatched from reality as opposed to firmy attached to it?

Thoughts please?
