We all know games companies make brilliant games. From Konami’s Metal Gear series, to Squaresoft’s long running Final Fantasy collection. But have these companies really been making games since they were established? They certainly want you to think this, but I went out with my notebook and pen to discover the truth behind the company’s histories. And here it is, very interesting I must say…

*Electronic Arts*

What they want you to believe-

EA are a Canadian company who have been making games all the time they have been around. They have three branches, EA Games, EA Sports and EA Sports BIG. Hits include Medal Of Honour Frontline and the brilliant SSX series.

The TRUTH-

Long ago in snowy Canada an old man sat down and decided he wanted to own a joke shop. After a bit of planning it was ready. He sold false teeth, plastic masks, and joke books. Then one day a man came into the shop with a suitcase. “Hello!” shouted the man. “Hello sonny” replied the joke shop owner. Then the sales man said, “I am here from Electronic Farts to show you our range of VERY funny products! Here we have our laxative tablet product!” said the salesman showing the owner a packet of red pills. “Pop these in your mates drink and they’ll be making visits to the toilet like there is no tomorrow!” Then the salesman brought out his second product. “This is our specialist product”. “What is it?” said the owner. “This my friend is our fart machine! Pop it near someone and press the button on the remote control and voila! Un-smelly, embarrassing toilet sounds!”

And so the owner purchased some. Soon this product was being sold all over the world. Due to EF’s success the company decided to expand horizons and so they decided to make games. Due to aiming at a childhood market as well, EF decided to change their name (Electronic Fart BIG would have been a bit rude) and Electronic Arts was born. After a while the Fart Machines were retired and could no longer be purchased. People wanted games! But then again, what’s more fun, FIFA or a Fart Machine?

*Konami*

What they want you to believe-

Japanese in origin, Konami are probably the most successful company of all time. The legendary Metal Gear series started off on the Snes and has been one of the best-loved collections of games ever. Konami also produce the brilliant Pro Evolution Soccer games. A top class company.

The TRUTH-

Konami seems like a Japanese word. It’s not. In fact it was made to look like a Japanese name to fool the customers. However I know the TRUTH. Konami did in fact start out as a small group of Japanese road workers and at first they were not called Konami; that came later. They had fierce rivals called The Concrete Gang. Each day they would have wars to see who was the best group of road workers. In order to sound the part, Konami called themselves, ‘The Cone Army!’. Unfortunately The Cone Army was no good at fighting and always lost. So, their leader called Hideo decided to make a game in which the player controlled The Cone Army to beat The Concrete Gang. For some reason this didn’t make it to the shelves. The Cone Army thought it might be because their name was stupid. So what they did was change it a bit to sound professional. The Cone Army became Konami, and from then on they were a big success.

*Ubi Soft*

What they want you to believe-

Ubi Soft, in case you didn’t know, produced the Rayman series and other games like F1 Racing Championship. They aren’t classed as one of the best gaming companies but they do sometimes produce the odd quality game. They were established in 1986 when they started making games.

The TRUTH-

In workplaces stress is a common thing. All the work, deadlines, it’s a wonder people don’t burst a blood vessel! This was the feeling of a certain man. This man thought it would be a good idea to make a Stress and Anger Management Company to cure the fierce stressed up nature of certain individuals. So he created his company called ‘You Be Soft’. People would come here to feel more relaxed and to rid themselves of fury. Soon when gaming was a common thing, the manger of You Be Soft realised that gaming would be a good method of ridding people of anger and stress. And so he decided to create games to help the people. Rayman was popular as it helped people forget their worries as they smashed seven bells out of many of the games monsters. Then, after a while, You Be Soft became a full time games company and was re-named as Ubi Soft. However a problem occurred. After a while the games started to lose the quality. Instead of getting rid of anger, games like F1 Racing Championship and Rayman Rush just added to the stress. Maybe squidgy balls is a better stress reliever after all?

So there you have it. News on three big games companies you thought you would never here. I would have brought you more but my note pad ran out of pages. They don’t make them like the used to.

Thanks for reading,
Nath.
