I can feel it; the light is approaching.
I hold out just long enough. I can feel it coming.
It is done. I feel my newbie skin fall to the floor, along with all the prejudices that were attached. I can feel the respect of others hitting me like the warm sun on a summer’s evening. Why was it like this I ask? Why did I have to write so much before my opinions were respected? Was it really worth it? So many questions, so little time to answer them.
The transition has not changed me (I hope). I still feel like the same person, but now I have no weight on my shoulders. I have shed my burden, and I no longer have to try and gain the respect of others. I am no longer working towards that 250-post border between newbie and regular. I can just sit back and enjoy my time here without anyone thinking I am a cheating, glory-hunting newbie with one lonely brain cell and no experience of the gaming world.
I know from experience that some newbies (*cough*, zean *cough*) get slated for posting pointless and hackneyed “which is the best” topics. I luckily have never experienced anyone calling me a “newbie fool”, or something akin to that. I try not to insight anger from others, except when they have made an obvious dig at me, or they have done something really, really stupid. I always tried to be respectful of other people’s views, and I always tried to express my opinion clearly and concisely.
So why do so many regulars and notables hate newbies so? Is it because all of them cheat and try to win GADs they don’t deserve? No, because this is not true, only a handful of newbies that I have seen have ever tried this. Is it because all newbies insult regulars? No, because they don’t, only a few do, and usually only when they get insulted themselves first. So why do regulars hate all newbies because of some fools? Punishing the majority for the stupidity of the minority.
I think it may have something to do with superiority. Everyone has been a newbie. They may have experienced these prejudices themselves, and so they want to give the same treatment to the new newbies. Is it some kind of hazing? Do only the newbies who don’t get insulted and stereotyped stay? I think it may be. Notables have a good reason to feel special; for they have been voted into that position, but surely regulars have had nothing happen to them except have the colour of their name changed.
Or is it more than that? Do regulars feel that they are special too, because they have been around in these forums for a long time, so they know what they are doing more than newbies? Regulars have been around for longer than newbies, true, but there is no reason why someone who is new to the site doesn’t have a valid view, or have experience in the world of gaming. So why automatically assume they know nothing?
I think that newbies should be given a chance. Let them establish themselves before writing them off. I hope that my new status will not corrupt me. I am now the middleman, and I hope I fulfill my duties as an advice giver, and experienced poster to the full.
I am sorry if a topic of this sort has been posted before, after all I haven’t been here that long…
Can I remember being a Newbie.....? I seem to remember Rasta getting annoyed with me for some reason.....?!
