The storyline is as follows: One day, Larry-O, and his brother, Muigi, both British Gas engineers, are on a call out one day, to fix a valve on a dodgy boiler, when their client, Princess Pink, gets kidnapped by a large, fat, drunkard who goes by the name of Boozer, who takes her through an interdimensional-portal into a strange land called 'Larry-O Land'. For the hope of getting into her knickers at the end, Larry-O and Muigi decide to try to rescue her.
This platformer is very simple in design. You have to control Larry-O through a number of similar stages, namely 'overworld', 'Underworld', 'Underwater' and in Boozer's Boozer, a local pub in each 'world'. Each 'world' consists of four levels which have a stage of each type, the only difference each time is the level of difficulty.
In each level, you can only travel from left to right. Once you've past something, you can not go back again. Each level has obstacles to avoid and some have dangerous enemies which will just walk past you and drop down a bottomless pit if you leave them alone. Most enemies are defeated by you jumping on their heads, though with the aid of a 'Water Plant' you can drown the enemies with the press of the circle button.
Here are the powerups Larry-O and Muigi can use:
Magic Suede: Hitting a [?] block from below will sometimes make one of these Magic Suedes appear. Collecting one of these will make you grow to double your size. If you get hit by an enemy, instead of losing a life, you will just shrink back to your normal size.
Water Plant: One you've collected a Magic Suede, the next time you hit a [?] block, a Water Plant will appear. Collecting one of these will allow you to shoot balls of water at your enemies, making them choke and drown.
Gold Jewelry: This can appear in many forms such as rings, ear-rings, necklaces, watches, eachwith their own value ranging from $1 to $10. Collecting $100 worth of Jewelry will give you an extra life, whereas $10,000 worth of Jewelry will give you an extra continue incase you lose all your lives.
The enemies that Boozer have sent to stop you in each level consist of Gamboos, Terrepins, Venus Sheep traps and Boozer himself who breathes out toxic beer breath that is almost pure alcohol vapour. If you get caught in that then you'll surely collapse and die of alcohol poisoning.
Every time you meet Boozer, he'll be standing on a table, doing a crazy dance, whilst burping his 'booze-breath' at you every few seconds. If you sober him up enough (by using the 'Water Plant') he will run to the bar allowing you to pass, alternatively you could jump over him, pick up a giant mallet, and whack him on the head knocking him out.
Once you've beaten him for the last time, you'll free the princess and make passionate love living happily ever after (until you run away with her riches that is).
Sony insist there are no siilarities between this and Nintendo's NES game, and insist no other features of any of their consoles and accessories have been copied from any other system. The fact that Larry-O where's dungarees and has a similar job is just a coincidence.
Well, who knows what this game is to be like? We shall soon see...
That's just the type of thing some developers are likely to do one day, and apparently Dark Cloud bares some simillarities with the Legend of Zelda games.
But surely something similar to a kiddy Mario game would just be too kiddy and immature for those hard-core, 'adult' PS2 gamers! ;)
So in my opinion, SONY would loose-out either way!
Despite the fact that this would be a great game.
;)
