SSH is telnet with encyption, and most UNIX distributions ship with this as a replacement to telnet. It's good if you actually have an account on the UNIX box (as opposed to SMTP servers), and encypts yor password instead of just sending it as ascii. It also encrypts data. There is an SSH client for Windows, called Putty. Just google for "putty", I'm Feeling Lucky.
Before web broswers took off, telnet and ftp was used to surf the web. Its not possible to view pictures, so its like using a dumb terminal.
