Telnet is horribly insecure, and I mean really really horribly. Use telnet at your own risk, but the risk is really large.

SSH is telnet with encyption, and most UNIX distributions ship with this as a replacement to telnet. It's good if you actually have an account on the UNIX box (as opposed to SMTP servers), and encypts yor password instead of just sending it as ascii. It also encrypts data. There is an SSH client for Windows, called Putty. Just google for "putty", I'm Feeling Lucky.

Just another way of connecting to a remote computer. There are thousands of public telnet sites with downloadable content, but I use it alot coz it's a handy way to connect to a UNIX box from a windows environment.

Before web broswers took off, telnet and ftp was used to surf the web. Its not possible to view pictures, so its like using a dumb terminal.
