Having come up with the idea of a light-gun based rally in my 'light-gun games' thread, I've been giving that daydream a bit more substance. So here is the full brief for 'Super Monkey Grappling Hook Rally': it should only be taken on by developers with a keen understanding of nutty Japanese things. It's definitely one of those games.

[Light-gun peripheral essential]

You play Okababoo, a monkey with a grappling hook-gun. Okababoo is the son of the all time greatest grappling hook racer, and must embark on a series of championships to prove his worth to his father.

The Nintendo-esque world that Okababoo lives in is full of other monkeys and bizarre technicolour vehicles and landscapes: ideal to stage the annual Grappling Hook Rally. These rallys take place across wide sections of terrain, incorporating monkey settlements, roads and nature at its wildest. There is no set route, and while Okababoo could run the race... it would take a-g-e-s. So the grappling hook-gun is brought into use.

You must fire at passing vehicles, creatures, objects, even other monkey-rally racers. Once your hook has latched onto the target, you can zip up the line at super-speed to be re-united with your hook. As soon as you've landed, or even before, you'll be looking for your next target. You'll have to be quick too, if you've hooked onto a branch, for example, it may snap under your weight. Or if you've latched onto a passing bi-plane, it might change direction, and you'll need to hook onto a passing bird (or whatever). But only the most accurate shooting monkeys will reach that hook. A loose latch often falls off, and the monkey will fall from the zip line into a crumpled heap on the floor. If you do survive the perils of the rally and manage to shoot the flagpole at the finish-line first, you'll scoop the ultimate honour of champion.

Of course, there'll also be power ups to collect and help you along the way:

-WATERMELONS: These restore health lost through collisions etc
-GREEN EGGS: You can fire these from your gun and they burst into a flock of birds which will munch through the zip-line of your nearest competitor.
-FIREWORKS: Okababoo can strap himself to a firework and aim it in a vague direction, he'll then be blasted towards his target at super-speed.
-PURPLE PINEAPPLES: These make your grappling hooks grow to a giant size: which makes it much easier to get a firm latch on target.
-PINK PINEAPPLES: These make the zip lines connecting the hook to the gun considerably longer. They will also be invulnerable to 'green egg' attacks.

The two player mode contains an equally bizarre twist. Like with Circus Maximus, there should be co-operative two-player team racing. Okababoo takes his little monkey cousin, Okatotoo and gives him a piggy back. This essentially means that both players can work together to get some dual-target action on the go. If you aim too far apart from each other, you'll fall as soon as the zip-lines go too far apart. Or you could alternate rapid hook-shots and gather a rapid pace by constantly firing off a fresh zip line. The opportunities are endless.

So, there it is... a copyright free game idea for any passing developer. Go on... it would be ace.
