It's Exciting, it's...er..saiko (apparently).

Sci-Fi (on Sky and Cable) has started a new series which pushes back the bounderies of games review shows. Take Japanese culture, youth TV and a spaltering of games reviews and what do you have? Well, the most promising games programme in years. Saiko-Exciting is a part games review programme, part anime showcase and part 'learn japanese'. What more could you need in a programme?

The format is simple. The female host, Seera, sits on a large couch and announces the sections, giving background information and a spaltering of Japanese words, while obviously borrowing from the asian style makeup and hair at the same time. Another lady, Emily Newton-Dunn, offers news and reviews of new games, and for once she seems to know what she is talking about. The clips are long and detailed, meaning that you can actually see what the game is like without the drivel so often following such screenshots on the Sky games channel.

Of course, with a programme on so early in the morning, they can't show too many violent clips, but they seem to do fine with what they have, showing Spiderman on PS2 and a long clip of Zelda on Gamecube, which incidentally looks so much nicer running than it does static.

The bonus to this package is that it is showing two of the best anime series as well, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Martian Successor Nadesico each week. If you want to get into Japanese animation there is no better way to start. Jonathan Clements takes the viewer through all that's new in Anime too, keeping you up to date with all new video and DVD releases and any new series which will be showing on Sci-Fi.

Mix these in with some strange Japanese pop videos and even an origami lesson in making a Yoda puppet and you have what looks like a winning formula. Admittedly, fitting so much in can be a problem, with only 2 hours and two episodes of Anime to fit in, but it works better than anything else I've seen so far.

Don't fear if you've missed the first part, they are showing the first episode of Saiko-Exciting again on Monday at 5pm. The series is also showing on Saturday at 10am and Sunday at 8am, so there is plenty of chance to catch it, even if you have to set a video.

It's not JUST because the shows were pants, it's that they were on too late. Like 1-2am for that 'Bits'!!!!!

Oh thats her from Bits. Its about time a half decent games show was made, sometimes i despair at the measly offerings we are expected to welcome with open arms.
