Well, mine would have to be (*take deep breath*)...
...The Saturn.
Yes, the overprice, under supported, badly designed console that had its development rushed and its release pushed forwards 6 months! (How often do we wish that would happen these days!).
Yet despite the tragedy that was the console, it was the games that made it one of the greatest moments in gaming for me. Sega managed to get around the terrible dev kits, and make some of their best games ever. We had NiGHTS!, which is hailed as one of the most original games ever, and is easily my favourite game of all time. Then there was the epic Panzer Dragoon series- so coverted that second hand copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga cost upwards of £100.
The console sported the first arcade perfect polygon based game ports- Virtua Fighter 2 was a perfect port, and Daytona was equally good. Fighting Vipers was fast and furious- Pepsiman has got to be my favourite secret charcater of all time!
Sega even managed to create the first EVER home console analogue stick controller that was released at the same time as NiGHTS!- esentially it was a black DC controller but with 6 buttons and a perfectly circular body. That was years before Nintendo's N64 came out.
Of course, I'm not living in denial here- the console was rubbish. Only Sega and Capcom got to grips with it, and it was no more than a poor attempt by Sega to compete with Sony's specs (the saturn was originally going to be poorly powered console. After Sony's specs were announced, Sega just shoved another CPU into the machine- making it hard to develop for and bunking up the price to £400! To add to that, there were no retailer schemes.).
However, that said, it showed how resiliant and creative Sega can be. Technically Sega have alwasy been very strong, pushing console to the limit. In the Saturn they proved they could work with terrible hardware and make great games.
But enough of me. What's your favourite age of gaming so far?

Ruled? Ruled? Ok, so SA2 may not have been the best in the series, but when was the last Mario console game released;) I think Sonic's still safely on top of MArio!
