"You've heard the stories and seen the pictures but the best way to judge the success of the US PlayStation 2 launch is by looking at the rather impressive figures.

According to Sony, first day sales of the console, along with software and peripherals, exceeded a staggering $250 million. The US Dreamcast launch yielded $97 million back in September 1999, shattering previous day one records by a mile. Sony's latest figures break down to $149 million for the console, leaving more than $100 million for software and peripherals alone. The Dreamcast launch sounds less impressive by the minute.

Over half a million PS2s were snapped up on the first day - the same figure was reached by Sega's Dreamcast after two weeks. Phew!"

The N64 has done strangely well in the US.

It's all very nice, yes. But what I'd dearly like to know is exactly what percentage of units are being returned with 'dodgy' DVD drives/trays.

The story *sounds* bad, but how out of proportion has it been blown - if at all? Is it a relative handful of units, or s significant quantity?

We all know what it's like - due to the size of the launch, everyone seems ready to jump on the slightest problem - so just how bad is it *really*?

I'd also like to know what's causing it. There were no problems with Japanese units, so why the US units?

Grix has put forward the possibility that it could be down to Sony moving the DVD software to flash ROM's inside the machine. I would think this is not the case (no offence, Grix) because that would surely affect ALL of the machines. My belief is that it's a dodgy batch of drives; if that's the case, then the questions are - how many are in that batch, and how likely are UK units to suffer the same problems?

It's great to hear this, it really is. But in a way i am angry at this post too. Bl**dy Americans have the machine already, please don't remind me.
