Designing a game....in a gameworld....

Imagine....so many places, people, ages and concepts have been made over the existent on the games console, from simple space shoot-em-up's, with battles in far, unknown lands, and more modern, hugely expansive lands, like those of the Final Fantasy games. Imagine if these places were real, if we could nip in to place bets on the chocobos or play bombchu bowling. How do you think you would feel if these places were real, and you could visit them. And more importantly, what would games developed *there* be like, basing them on places on Earth? Although the games industry has many games set on Earth, the amount set somewhere else is huge, so what would *those* places play? Well, imagine if.....

1)Final Fantasy 8 was set on a place like Earth. The huge(ish) Deling City would be the lights of Las Vegas, Winhill woul be a peaceful little village in England, and the Shumi Tribe would be based up in the Nepal, where only the brave venture across Everest to reach it. The people, the militaries and the magic would also be different and magic on Earth to us, may seem like an absurd possibility but to the people living in *these* worlds would maybe not have magic in their own worlds, so having it on Earth would be a respectable idea.

2)Zelda would be just as interesting to see, if it was based on Earth, with the Lon Lon Ranch being some stable down in South America, and the upcoming Hyrule village in a somewhat developing country. The Desert would be the open lanfds of the Sahara and the Gerudo Fortress being somewhere in Asia. And imagine if the almoight Ganondorf could ever be real, what fear would be put over us. And even though the people of Hyrule would appear to have no fear of the power taking over the palace, how ould you fell knowing that, in 7 years time the castle, and it's grounds, would be a home for evil. These are all things people in those worlds designing games would consider, and maybe reflect upon their own worlds, as we do with ours when we develop games.

3)On a lighter note, imagine if a place like, for example, Glimmer (from Spyro 2) was real. Talking dragons and portals to worlds, wqhat sort of insane game would they come up with. And if they based Spyro on Earth, the lands are so small, the places must be that to. You have the castle/temple based level, which could almost be a prehistoric Edinburgh, with the castle on the volcano, and tying in with prehistoric, the badlands, a vision possibly of Pangaea? How would creatures *there* design games? Would they have as creative brilliance as we do here, leading to all these places which exist, but can't explore?

Another crazy thought to put through is how do you think people from *these other worlds* would cope with coming to our planet. They have magic, we have offices, they have swords and spells, we have machine guns. And how would they cope having only 1 life rather than 3 lifes and 4 continues?(unless, of course, they're cats).

I guess this post is really on game reality, in an bstract sense. Perhaps, although everyone loves to play games to get AWAY from or own lives, developers should maybe think what *people* in other gameworlds would makes as games, considering what worlds they live in. They may be the opposite from us, wanting sanity over insanity, reality over surreality. Maybe if developers considered games from that point of view, new levels of creativity, design, and most inportantly, realism, could be achieved.

Now I'm not saying that we should stop making amazing great games involving huge expansive worlds or surreality (although for some reason, on consoles at least, this sort of game is in decline) and games such as Rez and the Final Fantasies should continue to be made but perhaps in a strive for realistic graphics and realistic sound they should strive for a more realistic game, too.

No more games where you can live for months, only eating when cut-scene demands, no more games where you can talk to someone once, and be told the same thing over and over. Although it is completely impossible to make a game so real it's like life (and if there was such a game, it would probably be rubbish) but as I said perhaps just more concentration on this sort of realism would be good.

Thanks for reading, and the stars are to show that I don't live in a fantasy world or anything, but to raise a point.

One aspect of playing games like
FF is that you can't *do* what the characters do in real life.

just put that missing word in.

As a general summary, if they did make games revolving around what we already know/do then it'd be boring. One aspect of playing games like FF is that you can't what the characters do in real life. The game is used as an 'escape' hence there purpose as a recreational toy. Still, good post - mixing Geography with games, LOVIN' THAT!
