I've found a deal from ADSLGuide.org that claims Pipex are doing a deal for £19.95/month - http://www.adslguide.org/isps.asp?action=detail&isp=pipex - I need to know the following first:
1. What speed (kb/sec) will 512/256 give me, as I heard that it would give me 51.2k/sec on average and 25.6k/sec on an upload speed?
2. "Microfilters can be purchased from your ISP for £8.50 each." What exactly are microfilters, and will they be supplied with my deal?
3. Does the following text have much significance on download speeds?:
Maximum Contention: 50 to 1.
IP Addressing: Dynamic
Number of IPs: 1
Transparent Cache: None
NAT: None
PAT: None
Webspace Provided: Yes
Domain Included: No
Email Account: Yes
Backup Dialup: No
4. "PIPEX can provide the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB ADSL modem for £99.95 +VAT including 2 microfilters." I presume by this, its not "wires-only", in that you have to shell out £100 for the modem and micro filters, or am I reading too much to this? In other words, by "wires-only", do they mean that you just plug the ADSL modem into the back of the computer? And when you sign up, will they give you the modem or will you have to go order it AFTER signing up?
So, basically, I want to know if this is going to give me speeds significantly better than 56k, and I want the price under £20 per month. Is it worth it?
All replies are appreciated.

Depends, most people go for a standard modem, which is all most people need, which just plugs into the back of your PC like a standard modem, usually via USB.
1. Those speeds sound about right yes.
2. Microfilters, or splitters, split your line into two parts, high frequency for the internet, and low frequency for phone calls. You need 1 microfilter everywhere there is something plugged into the phone line, so for example I have one here in my room, where there is a phone and the modem plugged into it, and one downstairs where there's a phone plugged into it. Installing is just a case of plugging the microfilter into the wall, and the equipment into the microfilter.
3. All that info is pretty much the standard. Only thing to note is the contention ratio, the lower the better (so a 25:1 is better than 50:1). Most providers are 50:1, but some, mostly business providers are 25:1.
4. Right, for your £19.95 a month you get your line changed over to an ADSL line, unlimited internet access, unlimited e-mail addresses, webspace etc etc. You do NOT get anything else. No one comes to your house, you dont recieve a modem, or any microfilters. This means you need to buy the microfilters and modem and install them yourself. I wouldnt advise buying the modem or filters from Pipex, as they are expensive. Try someone like www.solwise.co.uk
ADSL is MUCH faster that dialup, around ten times faster. Its well worth the money, i don't know how I lived without it, thankfully its not gone down so far, or I'll be stuck on 56k again, not a nice thought!!

This will give you download speeds of *around* 65 kilobytes per second, with upload of around half that.

It sounds like they won't be supplied, as they're giving you a price. Basically they let you plug both your ADSL modem and normal phone into the same socket.

This is the only aspect that will affect download speeds. It basically means that they have a set amount of bandwidth for a given area, and the more people log on at the same time, the slower it gets. All it really means is that you may find downloads get slower in the evenings as more people log on, especially if they're downloading large files too. Most broadband connections are the same (my NTL cablemodem is), and you won't really notice it too much.

Your £19.95/month is for the connection rental only. You will need to pay for the modem, but you don't have to buy from them so you may get one cheaper elsewhere. Try right here at SR.
Wires-only means that they will install the connection to your house and that's it - you will need to buy the modem, filters etc. With my cable connection, I also needed an Ethernet card - I don't know if this is the case with ADSL (cable and ADSL are slightly different), but I assume it is.

Far, far better!

If you can afford to get the necessary modem, yes, it's definitely worth it.
