ok fair enough he will probably be the best defender in the world and is pretty young but £35 million? thats a rip off. The way i look at it Man utd have 4 positions they need to fill to have a world class player in every position. These are the two centre back positions, a goalkeeper and another forward. Now ferdinand will cost them £35 million and is inconvenient to buy from another premiership club. Why bother? they have agreed 12.5 million for ayala and could buy him sorting out one cb position. Then the young excellent kevin Hofland of PSV is interested in a move to united and could be picked up for about £15 mil (according to PSVs statements about him being linked with leaving the club). The sale of Barthez should be a priority and Man utd could expect to make about 6 mill of him and could be redirected to buy the available and interested Rustu of Turkey who is a class act. Expenditure so far 27.5 million+Barthez. This leaves 7.5 mill left to buy a forward as well as any proceeds from the likely sale of dwight yorke or any other transfer funds. Rivaldo is available as barcelona are prepared to sell him for little over 10mil and he's likely to be interested in united but they can wait on the striker front anyway. I know in life transfers aren't that easy but i feel united could do much better with their money and looking at available players. (PS i do not support united)

You simply cannot call Rio Ferdinand a rip-off if he is to be signed by anyone for £35m! That's the way I feel anyway, especially after the way he's progressed up from West Ham into a World Class Defender!

West Ham sold for only £18m, when he was worth about £12m in the years before... surely he's gotta be worth over £25 now!

And I heard that it was Arsenal after Rustu, and that they are also favourites to land Hofland to link-up with Sol Campbell?
And what's wrong with Barthez anyway!??
Don't tell me you've lost faith with him after a few mistakes - he's the French no.1 for funk's sake!!

But unfortunately, it looks like United won't be signing anyone at all with the way things are going for us!
But at least Blanc's getting a new 1 year deal... :S

I don't see why £35 is so much tbh.

A club with that much cash would pay that for a striker.
A good striker scores you 25+ Premiership goals a season.

A good defender will PREVENT twice as many being conceded. Easilly worth investing in. Defenders have been underpriced for years. STam started the wave of price movement back to equilibrium, and it still has some way to go. £35 million for a player that could help you win the premiership and more is perhaps not a bargain, but certainly a wise investment.

Why would Stam move back to Man Utd? He has been linked to Arsenal, Leeds and Newcastle and on each occasion has stated that he would not move back to England, because of what happened to him at Man Utd.

Anyway he still wants to prove to the Italian Media that Lazio were right to buy him and due to the drugs ban he has yet to do so. If Lazio decide to sell him he will not be moving back to Engalnd and he defintely will not be moving on a free or less than 8 Million. So Ashley i don't know where you got your information from, but if Stam has a change of heart and moves back to Utd it will involve a transfer of about 6-8 million at least.

well i think the hammers would do well signing Gary Breen as he is free and good. West ham did well last season and i think it is only a matter of time before they reach europe with their superb youth system which is possibly only behind Man utd (brown, beckham, neville x2,scholes,butt,giggs) and Liverpool (gerrard, owen, fowler) then West ham are probably next with (cole, carrick, lampard,Defoe, ferdinand). west Ham have a fundementaly strong and need two decent centre backs and its a shame they had to sell ferdinand and didn't replace him properly they should have stolen middlesbrough's signings of southgate and ehiogu really.

Ferguson should give in and admit he is stubborn, if he had left this summer i think we would have seen the return of jaap stam to old trafford as Lazio haven't payed for him yet. Also if united truly is a bottomless pit of transfer funds then ferdinand would be a good buy if not (and this is the case) they would be better of spending more carefully.

This is how my Man utd team would look for the start of next season:

Rustu (5 mil)
Neville
Stam (more or less free)
Hofland (15 mill)
Finnan(5mill)

Beckham
Keane/Butt
Scholes
Giggs

Van Nistlerooy
Ronaldinho (20 mill)

Total expenditure: 45 mill
(all players more or less available)( The excellent mikael Forssell of Chelsea would be another up front alternative)

Players out:

Veron (28 mill) (lazio or more likely barcelona)
Blanc (Free)
Yorke (5 mill)

Total recieved: 33mill

Actual total (without Ayala)= -12 million
actual total (with ayala) = -25 million

Although not a world class manager this would seem a far more sensible approach and better allocation of trasfer funds. If United don't want Stam back (but it would be good to see them together having played together many times before) Ayala would bring spending to 57 mill but this would be more than made up for by the sale of Veron. (who i think has been unfairly treated, he has played as well as other members of the team he just didn't add anything new that you would expect for the money).

Ayala is a good central defender but his preferred position is as a sweeper. He may not be the best move for United if they want to shore up their defence as they would have to change the way they play/formation to ensure they got the best from him. You would then have another “Veron situation”. That said he is a class player.

I think that Rio will end up at Utd, which might explain the departure of O’Leary. Having to sell your best player is bad enough, having to sell him to your biggest rival is unbearable. £35 million is a lot of money though.

Hoffland looks good but didn’t Ferguson sell the best Dutch defender (perhaps best defender full stop) in a fit of pique? Strange move, though again he was “lucky” that Stam was banned for taking Nandrolone (this has got to be sorted out incidentally, athletes produce this naturally, I can’t see how everyone is “cheating”) making his departure look inspired. Then Stam came back and has looked awesome.

Well that’s enough of that. I’m just hoping my beloved Hammers can buy a couple of decent defenders. Any suggestions?

But we saw last year, with the purchase of Veron, that foreign players dont always adapt to the premoership. Sure, Hofland might do alright as dutch players always seem to do well in the premiership(rumours suggest that he is more likely to move to Arsenal, but who can you trust?). But Ayala could take time to adapt...

Ferdinand has proved himself to be quality in the premiership. And should fit in perfectly to the Old trafford set up. Although £35M is a bit much, Man Utd are full of cash...Especially being the richest club in the world...
