Campbell makes All-Star team

Sol Campbell has made the World Cup All-Star team, with the Gunners defender the only England player voted in by world experts on FIFA's panel.

Campbell, whose fine performances were overshadowed in the British press by Leeds centre-back Rio Ferdinand, played all of his country's games and helped England concede just three goals in their five Far East matches - two of those in the quarter-final defeat against Brazil.

The panel, including World Cup and Brazil legend Pele, picked a 16-strong squad of top performers, in which Aston Villa and Turkey defender Alpay, Sunderland's US midfielder Claudio Reyna and Liverpool's new signing from Senegal, El Hadji Diouf, were also included as Premiership representatives.

Reported Arsenal targets Rustu Recber, Ronaldo and Hasan Sas were all included in the side.

All-Star team: Goalkeepers - Oliver Kahn (Ger) Rustu Recber (Tur); Defenders - SOL CAMPBELL (ENG), Roberto Carlos (Bra), Hong Myung-Bo (Kor), Alpay (Tur), Fernando Hierro (Sp); Midfielders - Rivaldo and Ronaldinho (Bra), Claudio Reyna (USA), Michael Ballack (Ger), Yoo Sang Chul (Kor); Strikers - Ronaldo (Bra), El Hadji Diouf (Sen), Miroslav Klose (Ger), Hasan Sas (Tur).

It's been an odd World Cup....

But i'd like to see a friendly arranged between the World Cup winners, and the selected Team of the Tournament.

That'd be a great match, and would help people to not feel that the World Cup has entirely over.

I wanted to see something like this after France '98.
But all we got was France up-against some so-called 'World Star' team, in an entertaining game that saw France win again.

If we compare the All Star team that was made before the World Cup was played by the Times to the Offical All Star team and see how many of the recognised genius's showed their expected potential:

Times All Star Team before World Cup:
1. Kahn *
2.Roberto Carlos *
3. Thuram
4. Nesta
5. Zanetti
6. Zidane
7. Figo
8. Vieira
9. Ronaldo *
10. Raul
11. Veron

Of those 11 players only 3 made it into the All Star Team (Marked by *). This just showed that the the World Cup is very unpredictable.

But like many i believe that the main reasons that many of the top stars did not play to their full potential was due to injuries and long seasons.

How many top stars had injury problems? Zidane, Figo, Veron, Nesta, Rui Costa to name a few.

So i believe that this is the main cause that the World Cup in some eyes has been a disapointment, but i think it has been a very exciting World Cup, due to so many shocks. Don't expect this many shocks in Germany in 2006 though.

I still don't see how Alpay and Reyna made it, but Rio Ferdinand got nothing!! Still, good to see Sol Campbell in there - and shoudln't this thing be decided after the tournament's completely finnished????

Experts - bah!

I see Hasan Sas is in there, and deservedly so, but talking of Turkish players, what about Basturk? In my opnion he's been one of the most entertaining and creative players of the tournament.

I thought that Campbell was like a rock in defence and course scored that great headed goal too he deserves his place.

I agree, Carlos wasn't that good, defensive wise anyway. To be quite honest with you though, who else was there that plays left back, that played brilliantly?

Thinking now i can't think of one.

Also i agree with the fact that Sol overlooked Rio. I think Sol did have the advantage though of getting a great first game performance.

I was just about to make a post about his myself, just having found out from www.sportal.com

I fail to see how Campbell can be put in ahead of Ferdinand. I don't think I saw Rio make a single mistake - and he also made some amazing challenges. On the other hand, I can think of at least two mistakes made by Campbell. In fact, I wasn't particularly impressed with his performance at all in this world cup. His marking was off, and he wasn't pressurising attackers.

Not so sure about Roberto Carlos either. He's been excellent coming forward, but a little shaky in defence, which should be the priority for a defender, really...

The rest of the team is pretty much spot on.
