Well, that was all highly amusing!

We just had a major powercut here in Northampton. It didn't last very long, really, but it affected a very wide area. Much of the industrial estate my company operates from, including the company my mum works for (a mile away in one direction), and the housing estate I live on (a mile and a half in the other direction).

Strangely, not all areas were without power for the same amount of time. The building next door was out for about ten minutes, while we were down for about three minutes. At home it was apparently about five minutes.

Apprently "280-plus units were out", whatever that means.

But the traces of panic that surfaced were highly amusing!

Next door were locked in, because they have electromagnetic locks on the security doors. These switch to fail-safe mode, and lock everyone in!

We had call centre staff wanting to go home; all work stopped because the computers went down; and worst of all, the coffee machine was unusable.

We had a Director standing in the middle of the office, repeating the F-word over and over again, because some huge potential clients are visiting.

I jokingly mentioned to a manager that "we can't even get any coffee", to which he responded with a totally unimpressed, "there are more important things to worry about!" So I smiled and said, "Not when there's nothing else to do there isn't!" and walked off to read a magazine under an emergency light!

Then of course the power returns, and everyone's PCs start booting up. Temporary relief... until they realise that many people can't get back onto the network! Shock! Horror!

Then there are those who aren't particularly PC-literate wondering where their mornings work has gone, at which point the IT department starts answering phone calls with a Borg-like single voice: "Phoning us is futile - you must save work regularly!"

So eventually, IT Support sort out the network DHCP servers etc., and everyone starts to slowly calm down. Their electric security blanket is back to protect them from manual work, and they realise that "the worst day of their life to date" actually only lasted about sixty minutes altogether.

I just sat and watched in amusement!
