So here is how I break it down.
The PS2 has a huge library and many people have one, but it's showing its age and many of its big developers are going cross-platform. And although it has fantastic graphics, when it is compared to the XBOX or GameCube, it is of a noticeably lower standard.
The XBOX has a smaller library that is almost identical in style and substance as the PS2, but it is more powerful. However it's currently losing money and doesn't have a clear "hook" for any consumer outside of it’s promised online experience.
So, I think of the two, I would take the hit on power and probably pick a PS2. It has several choice games specific to the system and it's back compatible with my PSone games.
So, in my mind, it comes down to a PS2 v. GameCube.
I see the GameCube as more of a "boutique" type system, much like Apple computers. It is a powerful system, with consistent, high quality software, but a rather small library. I prefer the GameCube because I like to play Nintendo styled games, but the GameCube also has enough of the more immersing games like Resident Evil and Eternal Darkness to satisfy my more "mature" gaming needs. We also have to remember that the GameCube is the latest of the three consoles, and in my opinion had better games at launch than the XBOX currently has. So for me, the GameCube was the best choice. Also, I wouldn't put too much consideration into the Kiddie Vs. Mature argument because honestly it's a lot of garbage.
But the choice really IS a personal preference thing. I would look at the games that are exclusive to both, and decide which games you REALLY want to play. You also have to take into consideration the future games.
I bought the GameCube because I really enjoy Nintendo games. And with Zelda, Mario, Eternal Darkness, Metroid and Star Fox all coming out I couldn't pass it up. But if you are not at all interested in Nintendo titles, absolutely consider the PS2.
So there you go. That is my opinion. I would like to hear what some of you have to say on this issue.
Thanks for reading.
