If you have reviewed the current release dates for our video games you would have realised that games are being released at a faster rate then ever before. Every Friday when I walk past a games shop, apart from the usual cut-out figure, I see new promotion posters in the window trying to sell the latest video game spread right across the windows area. Every time I look at future release dates or the games which will be arriving this Friday it makes me wonder why games are being produced so fast.

At first I just think there are a lot of developers out there and so producing a lot of games for our shelves. But then I delve in a bit more a realise that maybe our games are perhaps being a bit rushed so to put it, maybe they could had been made a little bit better, added with just that little bit more.

The whole scenario is kind of the same thing. The release dates seem to be coming sooner then ever and I sometimes wonder whether this is a good thing or not. Sure I want the game I’ve been wanting for so long to come quicker but wouldn’t it be better if it came a bit later? I’m willing to wait, though it seems the developer thinks I am not.

But is it actually like that? Are the developers releasing our games for us or them? Sometimes I worry about the state of the gaming industry but when I think of this it worry’s me completely.

What am I getting at? Well it’s greedy game developers that’s what. It seems that many developers see that they have hit gold with one game and so release the sequel in somewhat no time at all just to make more money. The thing is, they know that they will be getting more money, the game is popular, people will buy it. Even if it is the same kind of thing, even if it does just offer another few levels, it will still sell.

I find it sad that the next instalment in a gaming series is released so soon. A series which comes to mind is the ‘Tony Hawks’ series. I was shocked when I found out that Tony Hawks 3 was coming out straight after I had bought Tony Hawks 2. It’s like I had just got into the game, just getting use to it and already the next game for it was coming along. Hold on Mr Developer, you’ve just released this, how on earth are you nearly finished the next one? It seems to me as if Mr Developer had been working on the newer game whilst working on the new. Confused? You should be, so am I.

Why spend time on a game which is going to be released in the future when you already have a title coming out? I would think that they would concentrate more on the game which is just to be released rather then the game which is to be released in the future. That’s logic, that’s how the game is made good, fun and a joy to play. Not rushed and over so quickly that you buy the next one.

But sadly, it’s also logic in the world of business to do things the way some developers are doing things. It’s the way they make there money, it’s what they want as a games developer.

I still expect release dates to come quicker and quicker, I also expect to see a more popular series have it’s sequels out too soon after the other. But thanks Mr Developer, I’ll just stick to number one, the first one where you actually put some effort in.

Ah I remember when Black & White (I think it was Black & White) was released with a major bug which needed patching yet they took ages bringing the patch. So then all the fans got angry and stuff :-D

Must be a developers worse nightmare that.

an interesting thing to note is that console game developers now suffer pretty much the same pressures that PC game developers do, and hence have rushed schedules. Of course, for PCs it's ok, since if you release a game slightly early, you can always patch it. Console games however, have to be ready on release, and hence seem to be shortened in some cases as a "better safe than sorry" gesture to meet the deadlines.

Yeah, Mario and Zelda aren't looking like 'short and sweet' gmaes to me... more like 'big, sweet, and damn good!'

Anyway, the thing with the sequels is that developers will continue to do it as long as people buy them, and die hard fans of the original probably will buy sequels even if there are few improvements simply because they do want more of the same. But then of course there are some developers who do only release sequels when they have something new to offer... Which is always nice!

No doubt about it, the FIFA series is something I should had meantioned. You would think that after all of the releases it has had they would had put on alot more to improve football games. But they haven't really, have they?

Thats a genre that needs improving - Football games. I must admit though that it must be damn hard to get the players to move realisticly like they do in real football and some other things. They also have some things that are really obvious. Sometimes I wonder if a games be playtested.

Hopefully though, it will improve in the future, it should do and it should had done by now by the number of games we've had from the FIFA series. EA must have made alot of money from that series...ALOT.

Back in the days of the N64 Nintendo held their games up like anything and just kept putting in finishing touchs. If makes me think - if Nintendo released the games earlier would they be the classics which we actually played? I think thats what we have to ask ourselves and what the developers have to ask themselves.

They're not doing with the Cube though and the way things are going it looks fine on some fronts. I mean, they are holding back some games, their bigger games but not their smaller. That's cool as the smaller have turned out excellent at the moment, just imagine what the bigger titles will be like.

Oh and the title of this topic is actually - Too Soon? heh :-D

Well, I reckon you have a very good point (another series is most definitely the FIFA series... it may not be out again so quick, but by god they come around each year as regulay as clockwork don't they?) for some series...

But there is the argument for the attitude of 'if it aint broke don't fix it'. Of course, people will argue that series always do have improvements (Tony Hawks with new tricks, manuals, etc.) but these are rarely big leaps that actually warrant a whole new sequel by themselves. But of course, some people may have enjoyed the original enough to simply want more of the same.

The flipside of this is how much improvement actually does warrant a sequel? Like you may say you are willing to wait longer for a sequel and I don't doubt that. But when it gets to sequels getting put back on Zelda: OOT proportions with delay after delay, where do you draw the line...? Where is the balance between having enough new features and innovation and bringing the game out quickly? It could be argued that a developer could just keep putting a game back practically forever to put in more new features, new levels, new characters, etc. etc. In fact I think Shigsy actually said this about Zelda:OOT, saying he really could have packed it with a lot more features but couldn't do it all in the time, even though he worked on the game for years!

So in all it should be a balance to best benefit the gamesplayer, but it seems increasingly that business sense is becoming a larger issue, and demands games be put out quickly and efficiently, which means 'cash-in' sequels are a god send to developers who need a quick buck or two.
