Due to the surprise results envolving the the big-names of the likes of Argentina, France, Italy, Spain, and even Holland since day one of the Qualifiers, and the surprise progression of the likes of Senegal and South Korea in the Finals themself, this has been one World Cup you could never afford to miss-out on.
To tell you the truth, this World Cup would've appeared as normal as any other if we didn't judge teams by their FIFA World Rankings, and their players by the teams they play for domestically.
If we didn't do that, then realistically, China would've stood as good a chance of winning the World Cup as Brazil do now!
But it's not that way in football, and so big shocks like South Korea knocking-out Brazil (even if it was unfair) do happen.
If we've learnt anything from the 2002 World Cup then it's that anything can happen and that no team or player should be underestimated, no matter where they're from or which club they play for.
It doesn't matter if they're playing is Spain for Barcelona or even down at Brighton and Hove Albion, the only differences will be the money they're earning and the competitions they're playing in!
This has been proven on quite a few occasions in the tournament so far, and you never know what surprises could still lie ahead on Sunday, and also in the future in 2006 and onwards!
Senegal are the team that instantly comes to mind when you think about small teams doing big things - especially in their year as World Cup Debutants! Not only did they shake-off France in style, but they also went on and on into the finals where their superb run of form was sady put to an end by one of the 'bigger teams'. Thanks to their achievments and hard work, players including the outstanding El Hadji Diouff have since been recieving all the attention and recognition from the big European clubs that they've been working for!
Hard work really can get you a long way!
When it comes to taking direct Free Kicks, there are only a few people who srping to your mind at international level. Roberto Carlos, David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane are all obvious choices. But would you have expected to see a free kick like that to come from <***> - a SOUTHAMPTON player!!? No! Of course not. Merely because Southampton are a small club who always seem to scrape away from the Premiership's bottom 3 but get nowhere else with their lack of 'real international stars'.
South Korea and Ireland are 2 other surprise teams who made it MUCH further than expected - also down to a lot of hard graft and bucket-loads of blood and sweat. They were also some of the favourites to fail miserbaley in the Group Stages, but just like the Senegalese, they proved that if you try hard and don't look back, you can go far and make a name for yourself - just like Ireland did against Germany, and should've done against Spain.
It doesn't matter if you're teams full of a load of Top-Flight or Lower Division rejects, just as long as they work and hard and work together as a team they can achieve the goals they're aiming for.
Diego Forlan was another one of those players who was just left to rot on the bench with no real expectations from the fans or other players. But he showed us all-up for the idiots we really are, as he struck one of the greatest World Cup Goals to date!
So once again we learn that you should never underestimate players who have proven themselves to be 'world-class' at all levels.
So we've learnt a lot from this World Cup. As well as seeing some of the most entertaining football in an international competition for years, we've had a few major surprises and a lot of the smaller names have done more than doubled in size. Even if they're playing for the little guys or if they are a little guy themselves, you should not underestimate their potential when pushed to the max!
Whoever win's the award for Golden Boot, or Best Player after the tournament's ended, don't expect it to neccesarily be someone as big as Ronaldo or Oliver Kahn. Why it could just be Lee-Ching So (or whatever his name was) - you never know!!
It is actually Miroslav Klose.
