My soundcard, which is needed, is not working :-(

It all started when my mouse kept freezing up and crashing my PC. Last night it crashed my PC again and when I went to restart I got a message on startup saying that my registery has been damaged. It then told me to run scanreg /fix and so I did but then I got another messege halfway through it saying that there is an error in the registery. I tried just doing scaneg and I got the same unfortunatly.

At this time my keyboard worked but my mouse drivers were corrupted I found out, so i istalled another mouse and it worked fine.

So now I thought all was ok...

I go to put on some music and I am faced with an error in mmsystem004 and that the system device for it is already in use. Fair enough, I go and use ctrl-alt & delete and close down all unwanted programs...still get the same problem. So I run msconfig and take off some startup programs...still get the same problem.

I checked the system devices and everything looked ok so I went into the sound section on my control panel. Here I saw that there was nothing assigned to audio sound playback and everything else there. I'm not sure if that was like that before but I tried changing it to my soundcard but it was not listed. Instead I just changed it to game compatable device.

I try again and now I get a new error messege saying that the file format is not supported - mmsystem032.

I figured it must have been my soundcard and it's drivers so I reinstall the soundcards drivers and still get the same problem, which tells me the playback device is still in use.

Ok, so I go and remove my soundcard from the system and reinstall it and in this process it tells me that the wav file, midi file etc cannot be uninstalled and so it goes on just to add the soundcard and it's programs. I actually tried doing this when the soundcard was still there and I got the same thing.

So all that could be installed was and still I get the same thing and it's getting really annoying. I've looked on sites for help and you lot are my last hope :-( I NEEEEED SOUND!

Ah I also noticed that since this registry thing happened I cannot manually remove programs from the control panel as thry are not there?!?

Please help.

I better stop now before this gets dirty,
So Norton please put back on your shirty.

I cured my PC earlier today. I just ran a system check through Norton on the registry and it fixed it. Doh!

Tried that but as I go to reinstall it tells me that the registry is corrupted and installing windows over it may cause it not to run.

Shall I just go over it?

Your best bet is to re-install your O.S, mate. Sounds like a clash of drivers.
