Lyrics are good. I'm fine with lyrics. Lyrics are easy.

But how the f**k do you write music to go along with them... I'm not looking for single/13 track albums here, proper proper music, whole album is a story, Pink Floyd more kinda stuff, not radio hits or anything, just music.

I have:

o- No experience with writing music whatsoever.
o- A saxophone that I play badly and is only one instrument in a legion of shedloads that I want to play.
o- An apparent little talent for writing, and I love doing it, which is more important to me.

But I don't want to write songs... I guess you will understand what I'm going on about here, it's... I'm not stuck up from 3 min songs or anything, just not what I'd prefer to do, I'll end up doing some I guess if I really got going, but only so it's part of a larger picture.

I have a large passion for writing, and a large passion for music. I'm relatively experienced in writing, but utterly non-so in music. Listening is about all I do, I can't express in music, but I'll be happy to bet that's got a lot to do with me never practising/trying.

I can express myself pretty damn well, well, as much as I can, by writing. I don't think it's a natural talent, it's just come from me doing nothing ELSE but writing. But I'm no composer, lyrics mean a lot to me, but I can only really get rhythms and stuff.

No idea why I'm writing this. Just on my mind.

I'm going to write some lyrics, and then go try and lay them out a bit. See what happens, play keyboard and stuff.

I use swearwords for expression, not for laziness, so don't worry. :0) I could have said "how the hell", but in fairness, I'm a little more stumped to how to create music than that.

And Venom, calm down and stop worrying. :0)

Grix, why the sudden increased use of swear words?

You, above all people, have the ability to express yourself without them.

Change? Denial?

Change?

Don't try to [note to self: look up a word for 'decrease the importance of'] what you have thought at any time. It's all you. Address it, don't dismiss it. Or swear at it..... that's not what being 'strong' is.

If you ignore anything, ignore me. I'm ignorant. I can never understand what it's like to be you. And I don't.

Ignore me. I'm not thinking straight right now.

Messing around with a keyboard is actually the best way to start.

If your lyrics have tune already.....

Then find on the keyboard the notes you've invented and play them at a deeper or lighter key, in chords.

If they don't....

Then just go on the keyboard to see what keys fit the words.

It's easier to write other music parts if your lyrics have a tune already, at least for me anyway, as usually an idea of other instruments and roughly what notes come in to my head.

It may sounds silly but the best time to be creative with words is when something particulary/good/bad has happened to in your life. I usually go and brainstorm everything I'm feeling onto paper the leave it for a while.

I come back and I then stand a better chance of putting it all together, it's easier to be clever with words in your normal state too as you're looking at it with a different mind. You can then start to write.

Placing music around it is hard, so maybe getting a small basic tune in your head first while you picture the song and put it together is a good idea. Messing about with Dance Ejay type programs is a good idea but it will soon becomes something you use for backing tracks.

Well that's what I do anyway, it doesn't always work out like that obviously. :0)

I found that "idiot's sequencers" were great to tinker with. I'm talking of things like Music 2000 et al. Drag 'n'drop interface just lets you monkey around and knock tunes out in no time, with no writing talent required. Can't remember the name or URL, but I'm sure that there's a good free one out there in the ether - try asking around on some music sites...
