The first thing I would like to make clear is that Vincent Gallo is one of the most arrogant men currently in existence and is so up himself that even if you like him you'd admit he was an arrogant w***er. I mean his website contains the following threat:
"Let’s not turn this page into a waste of my time, or I will never direct another film." and the equally arrogant "if I notice any polluted messages, which usually come from bitter, jealous, ugly, poorly-hung men, who are unhappy at work and wished their whole life to be like me..."

However, he does have a lot to be arrogant about. He's an actor of some ability and a director, both of which he did in the film "Buffalo '66", which was a brilliant film. He's also a writer, photographer, artist and most importantly a musician.

That's what I'm going to write about, because despite being arrogant, he is a damn fine musician. He's on the Warp Records label, famous for releasing albums from the likes of Aphex Twin - pretty experimental stuff. However, Gallo doesn't make dance music. The best way I can think of describing his music is as the bridge between ambient dance music, jazz and guitar. He's released a couple of film soundtracks and best of all "When", a collection of 10 songs which is what I'm recommending you to listen to. Some of the songs are instrumentals and others include a vocal, but the strange thing is the notes he plays almost speak for themselves. Now that might sound like complete crap, but if you've listened to some good dance music, it's sort of like that.

The stuff with the vocals on is even better though because Gallo has such a tender voice, and he uses it as an additional instrument, rather than letting his voice take centre stage. I don't know how to describe it adequately, except that the album is the most beautiful, jazzy, and just plain brilliant album that I own. Probably also the most experimental.

If you want a taster then I'll upload a couple of the tracks:

"When" - It's one of the songs that has a vocal, and it's beautiful

"I wrote this song for the girl Paris Hilton" - this one's a jazzy instrumental that throbs and ebbs and flows

I've uploaded them both at webstorage.btinet.net
