The first game announced with a new spin on an old favourite, with Mortal Kickabout currently in the final stages of development. The game allows you to play in 5 a side matches with all of your Mortal Kombat favourites, with many of their special moves included to up the excitement of the game. For instance, if an opponent is through on goal, why not use Sub-Zero's ice capabilities to create a skiddy patch beneath your opponents feet, leaving them to slip as they take the shot. If more drastic measures are called for, why not simply haul the player back using Scorpion's special spike move? If that's not enough to convince you, how about the chance to have the many-armed Goro play as your keeper? You thought you'd seen football violence? You haven't seen a thing until you've played Mortal Kickabout.
Capcom were also quick to show that they're in the football spirit, with 'Goals and Ghosts' being released on all platforms in September. The game sees you back in the shoes of Arthur, with nasty looking creatures all around you. Only this time not only do you have to battle to stay alive against them, you also have to shoot a special 'golden ball' past a boss character into a cursed goal. Still present are the wide range of weapons, but the huge 3D environments are far removed from the simple platform games of the past. A co-op mode is also available, allowing you to pass the ball to another player, and team up to take out all of the enemies.
Konami also had a football based game to boast of. 'Solid Snakes Stealth Soccer' is a football game with a real difference, as the pitch has no opponents on it, just a few obstacles, such as walls, and burned out cars. Also, it's pitch black. Your mission on each of the levels is to locate the ball, using your special tracking device, then guide it into the goal. What makes it especially tricky and challenging is that spotlights move around the pitch the whole time, which you must keep well away from, or you'll be spotted, and it'll be game over for you.
Sega really have shown a huge commitment to the sport though, with no less than three titles based on the worlds favourite game:
First up was the Gameboy Advance exclusive 'Alex Kidd in Soccer World'. A game which sees the return of 8-bit big eared hero Alex Kidd, only this time he has a football stuck to his foot. It seems to be in a similar vein to 'Soccer Kid' a game which enjoyed some success a number of years ago. You simply travel around different lands, kicking the ball at any enemies that approach, though Sega claim for this game to be far more puzzle-based. The levels are set around different footballing nations, including such stunning backdrops as Paris, full of weeping French men, a flaming Moscow, and the bars of Ireland.
Secondly was a title for PS2 and Gamecube, 'Echo the Goalphin'. As they say, it's a game of two halves, and Echo the Goalphin is certainly that, with part of the game involving getting to the games, with the ball. These parts will have you swimming through all manner of obstacles, keeping the ball, as you make your way to the next match. You'll have to alter the flow of the water, move rocks, push buttons, and make sure those nasty squids don't get the ball if you're to get to the match on time. The other part of the game is the the matches themselves, where you'll join other dolphins to take on many other creatures of the sea, including whales, sharks and octopus.
Finally, Sega saved the best till last. An Xbox exclusive 'Football of the Dead' uses an improved and modified Virtua Striker engine to provide a realistic soccer experience, with zombies. Ronaldhino was used as a character model, so you can imagine just how frightful the zombies will look as they take part in the undead world cup. Rather than player with the ball, they'll use the head of one of the team captains, this will be decided at the start of the match with the toss of the coin, before deciding which und to play. Which side the head belongs to will be a huge importance to the game, as it will shout words of encouragement to team-mates, and try to bite the toes of opponents. Further features include the special 'buster-boots' shot, a shot so powerful that it can blast right through a decaying zombies body. As the game goes on it will become more difficult to manouvre around the pitch as some of the rotting corpes will have lost limbs which could cause wicked deflections. It's sure to be a football gore-fest.
Look out for these titles in the near future, and remember where you heard it first! ;o)
Wait...could this be the big 3-0??
Keep it up
And from what I've heard, FIFA games on ALL consoles have those symptoms.
:D
But really, thanks.
And I haven't played it, but apparently the FIF game on Gamecube plays something like you're controlling toads.
And he has a big mushroom head...need I say more?
I wish I'd get some appreciation...
:D

Cheers. It's always nice to be complimented on things I write, I really appreciate it. :o)
For the Nintys out there, how about 'Fifa: Toad to the World Cup', where you control a team of toads with different coloured mushrooms head as they strive to reach the biggest tournament on Earth.
:D
Great post Meka!
