For £5 I can get a magazine with cheats, walkthroughs, reviews, previews and sometimes playable demo's.
For free I can go to a games web-site, copy a walkthrough or some cheats, post it on word and print it out.
For 5p a minute I can have some fat sweaty git who spends his time listening to prank calls all day, talk me through a game by reading a walkthrough which he got from the above two sources, probably dragging the conversation on so I finally get £10 charged on to the phone bill.
Or I could play the game, and figure out how to get unstuck myself. I only cheat or use walkthroughs as a last resort, as they do tend to spoil the whole point of finding out how to complete the game in the first place.
