You like “Silence of The Lamb” right? But you thought “Hannibal” was “Carry on Cannibal” and found it whiffy of cheese?
Damn straight you did.
But did any of you ever see “Manhunter”? It’s based on the novel “Red Dragon” by Thomas Harris and is the (for wont of a better plug) the 1st time Lektor (book spelling) appears.
Michael Mann made Manhunter in the late eighties and it rocks.
Plot?
A serial killer is murdering families and nobody has a clue how to catch him. So the FBI bring in veteran profiler Will Graham. Graham has the dubious gift of being able to project himself into the mind of psychopaths. Not in a weird clairvoyant way, he’s just perceptive and can think like a monster.

It rocked big time.
And now Dino De Laurentis has decided to remake “Manhunter” (subliminal masterpiece) and make more money from what is fast becoming a Freddy Krueger franchise of Hannibal Lektor.
Nevermind Lektor appears in the book twice, and in Manhunter his screen-time adds to about 10 mins.
Brian Cox played Lektor in Manhunter and did it perfectly.
The problem I have with SOTL and Hannibal is that Hopkins is so fakking camp and obviously mental from the get-go. Wheras Cox’s interpretation was sly and intelligent, you could see how he had evaded capture until Graham got onto his mindset.
But Hopkins is all wide-eyed, wiggly-fingered madman and if you saw him in the street, you’d run away.

In the book, the serial killer is described as 6’4”, blond and immensely powerful.
So who do they get to play him in the remake?
Ralph Fiennes. Ralph Fiennes….not tall, not blond and not physically imposing.
And for the role of Will Graham? A mid-40s, burned out psychological mess with residue from previous maniacs still running around his head?
The dry-mouth Edward Norton. With a blond dye-job and he still looks like a boy.

This is going to blow donkeys, mark my words.
There was no need to remake Manhunter.
This isn’t about faithfully recreating Harris’ best book in the trilogy. This is about getting fatty granpa Hopkins to slick his hair back and whisper like a big fairy for 90 mins.
And it’s directed by the bloke that made Rush Hour 2.
‘Nuff said.
Watch the trailer and try not to laugh as, with his stupid accent, Hopkins saying “He is refining his methods” turns into “He’s Ralph-Fiening his methods”

Comedy gold, a***-clenchingly bad trailer for a pointless film.

Can't think of the exact words right now, but my favourite quote is the one something like this:

If they can prove that films lead to violence then fine, I'll give it up, and do magic instead, as I've been getting into that lately.

Never seen Manhunter, one of those films that I meant to watch last time it was on TV, but then forgot.

But this sounds like a VERY bad idea.

But hey, Boogie Nights does indeed rule. One of my top films.

"He's Ralph-Fining his methods"

Listen to that again and realise just how poor this will be.
I'm going to watch Manhunter tonight right after my R1 2-disc Boogie Nights that just arrived.

Ha ha, I just watched the trailer and it stalled on Edward Norton - his face was moving back and forth maniacally and his voice was stuttering, and it really reminded me of that Edward Norton's Antivirus post I did.

"Just because I played a serial killer in Primal Fear doesn't mean I'll go mad and try and corrupt your computer from the inside."

And he did!

I agree that it looks like a bit of a mess, but I think Norton's closer to the Will Graham in the book than the guy who played him in Mann's manhunter...

My vision of Will Graham is someone who looks like Blur's guitarist:

Don't know why... but yes the film will be poo like Hannibal.
