It's obvious that with each passing generation of videogames consoles, and their games that they are become a lot more like movies rather than offering an actual videogame. But is this what gaming has become, or what it will become. What characteristics still remain, that make a game a game, and not a movie. If the whole point of a videogame is to take control of someone’s (or something’s) life, then why is it that some of the best selling games are barely doing this at all? A lot of these bestsellers are full of FMV's (Full Motion Video) leaving very little game-play.

Sony and Microsoft have even said it themselves. Their goals are to become the ultimate entertainment machine in your living room. Forgetting to include actual game-play and concentrating on including best-selling storylines, and spectacular videos and cinema instead are now their goals. Sure all that's important, but if that is what a company is focused on then they are obviously in the wrong industry.

They should pack their bags and move onto an industry where you sit and watch and have no control whatsoever. If companies like Sony, and Microsoft continue to do this then all we'll have in the end is another movie industry leaving one-time loyal gamers feeling empty. If this happens the Gaming Industry could still very well exist, but it wouldn't be the same as it was one time. Games would have even more FMV's than they do now, and actual game-play will become a thing of the past.

For the sake of anyone who has been into gaming for a long time, someone who really loves and enjoys gaming, I hope this does not happen. But with the way things are going that is not likely. If something does not change we will soon only have memories of what gaming used to be.

Hopefully things will change quickly enough to prevent this from happening. But the current reality is this. Nintendo is the only one left who doesn't seek to create the ultimate entertainment system. They simply state that they want to create the ultimate gaming console and offer high quality game-play. They are the only one left who concentrate on making excellent game-play first, rather than beautiful graphics. Great stories, and FMV's are important in a game as well, but what originally made gaming what it is today is game-play, and the newer games need to stay the same. Offering epic game-play that will appeal to thousands of people like it should. They don’t need to have loads of violence and offensive language that sells copies like hotcakes like today.

Things need to change, and they need to change fast, and thanks to companies like Nintendo, we may just have a chance at it.

Games are becoming more and more like movies in a realistic sense, but other than that I still think movies and games are a good distance apart to notice which is which.

Games like Max Payne and Headhunter are good examples of games that use the same theme as you see on the big screen, which is mainly based on the storyline.

Gaming is going the way of movies in the storyline sense, not really the gameplay.

For a moment there, I thought this would be exactly the same as the topic I just posted in Prime! Luckily mines more about plots and stories...

In response to the topic, the industry shouldn't try to compete or emulate films- the whole structure of the mediums is different. Films are based on linear plots that are pre-written. Gaming is interactive, and the player should determine the way the story flows. Your shouldn't be forced to play towards a prewritten list of actions- you should determine what goes on.

Good post btw, and check out my one in prime.

I agree with what you're saying, video game companies want to offer the ultimate gaming experiences, but each company has differing views on what these gaming experiences should be; we have Nintendo who, as you said, believe in great gameplay over graphics and choose not too make games with film like atmosphere, whilst other companies want to offer realistic movie like experiences to players.

MGS2 is a prime example of how movies have influenced games, but also an example of how cut-scenes can be slightly too obtrusive in the experience.
Don't get me wrong though, as film like gaming can be great, but finding the right blend of cut-scene and gameplay is important.
