The World Cup So Far:

Before the World Cup had started it was expected to be the average world cup with the stronger nations getting further, however this has defiantly not been the story, as you all well know.

The first major event that happened was the early exit of the current world champions France, in fact they didn’t just exit the competition in the first round, but they finished bottom of their group!!
Argentina also left the tournament early after a defeat the all might England lads! Already this wasn’t shaping out to be an ordinary World Cup, it was an extraordinary one.

With the current champions out, and the favourites on there way back to South America, it left England with a more than likely chance of getting far in this tournament.
England didn’t exactly get off to a flying start themselves; they cold only manage a draw with Sweden, and a draw with Nigeria, but the win over the favourites Argentina got them through to the second round!

So now with Argentina and France out of the world cup it left it more open, one of the shocks of the world cup was U.S.A’s amazing 3-1 victory over Portugal, this gave the Americans an amazing lift, they did progress to the second round in second place behind Japan.
Japan’s qualification ahead of Portugal and Poland was thought to be impossible, but they didn’t just qualify, the came top of their group, this was brilliant for the co-host nation.

South Korea who was also hosting some of the matches qualified as well.

After a 1-1 draw with Cameroon left Ireland with an uphill battle to qualify to the second round, they had to play Germany in their second game, this was always going to be a tough match, and it was made even more so because in Germany’s previous game against the Saudi Arabian’s which they won 8-0!!!
Ireland left it late; Germany took the lead, and it took a 92nd minute goal by Robbie Keane to equalise.
This result meant that Ireland had to beat Saudi Arabia by 2 goals, which they did.

Second Round:

A second round of the world cup without France or Argentina isn’t really a second round. Sweden had to face Senegal who had beaten France 1-0 in the group stage; Sweden lost this match in Golden Goal. England had to play Denmark who had had come top of their group, as you will all know England won this match pretty damn comfortably.

Italy had to play South Korea; before the game had started you would have bet your life savings that Italy were going to win. If you did do this you would have been crying; it was a shock win for the Korean’s but a helpful one to everyone else.

Turkey beat the co-hosts Japan 1-0 after an 18th minute header.

The U.S.A. continued to shock the world after a 2-0 win over Mexico; this might just boost footballs popularity in the U.S.

Germany cut it fine against ; it took them until the last couple of minutes of the game left.

Spain had an undeserved victory over Ireland. Ireland played the better football all through the match and should of won; after missing a penalty which would of put them back on level terms with the Spaniards, it took a Robbie Keane penalty to bring them back level. They eventually went out on penalties.

Brazil got through to the quarter-finals by beating Belgium 2-0, however the score line does not reflect the game; Belgium dominated a lot of the position, and Brazil were short at the back.
Belgium also had a goal disallowed for a foul on the defender, however this was not the case.

There have been many stupid and some times pathetic examples of refereeing and the assistants have got it wrong more than once.
Take Rivaldo’s amazingly obvious injury against Turkey, the assistant referee was standing to or three yards away from the incident and still didn’t see it!!! The result of this “Incompetence” was a sending off!

Totti also should not of been sent off against South Korea; ok so the referee was spot on with the first challenge, but why did he book Totti for diving!? Totti should have claimed for the penalty but there was no way that he could of stayed on his feet, maybe because of incidents like this television replays will be available to referee’s. we might even see them in the next World Cup, in my opinion they shouldn’t be used as it would reck football.

And the question now is: “What has the rest of the World Cup got in stall for us?”

Thanks For Reading

If England go out I would love Senegal to win as they were given no chance before the World Cup with worse odds than Saudi Arabia. Basically they have won our hearts like the Ireland team have.

A few losers and a winner. :D

Seriously, anything could happen in this world cup which has so far been full of suprises. For example, I don't know anyone other than the optimistic supporters of England who didn't guess that the pre-tournament favourites, Argentina, Italy and France would be the enventual winners.

Unfortunately I think that we have run out of suprises and the eventual winners will be out of the four big teams, Brazil, England, Spain or Germany.

But......as I said before and has been said by many others. Anything is possible in this most unusual of World Cups.
