Tomb Raider's just one of the many examples of games that aren't even worth choosing between another game. The reason I say this is because all we've seen over the couple years of Tomb Raider's "improvements" are vast improvements in Lara's bum and breast size. Fair enough, it is quite nice watching a lovely figure of a woman run across the screen for a certain amount of time, but once the game doesn't measure up it soon gets boring. At the end of the day what you expect from such a game is value for money. The Tomb Raider series were fun to play on maybe say 2 & 3 because in comparison to the first one, they rocked! And at that time, crap games were becoming a habit for the PlayStation market, so people bought it.
Looking at their sales, I'm sure Eidos sold a lot more copies of Tomb Raiders before Tomb Raider 4 and Chronicles were made. Notice at the end of Tomb Raider 2, Lara's in the shower (surprise surprise) and at first sight it blatantly seems like she's shot herself, which hinted that another Tomb Raider wasn't going to be made. But then play it again and you notice that she shoots the screen saying; "You've seen enough for now!" Teasing isn't it? So fans got their hopes up and were eagerly anticipating a Tomb Raider three, me being an ex-fan myself. Eventually, Tomb Raider 3 came out and I remained delighted with Eidos. The graphics were improved and Lara seemed to move with a lot more prestige and confidence within herself? Her response was better to the controller I mean. The basic "Tomb Raider" system remained the same though, but still the storyline and great levels made up for this.
Then it all went wrong for Eidos. They did something every gamer does not want, does not like and doesn't appreciate. they made Tomb Raider 4, a total imitation of all the previous Tomb Raider games combined. I was not a happy chappy. I felt a very lucky and privileged person to continue my collection of Tomb Raider titles on the Playstation, then when Tomb Raider 4 came out and I played it non-stop for about 8 hours, I simply fell out of love with Lara. The game suddenly turned from one of my greatest treasures to something I wanted to instantly burn! Tomb Raider 4 literally sucked Lara's butt! The gameplay hadn't been improved in the slightest and neither had the graphics. All they did was add in a couple of extra ugly-looking characters and average looking levels, oh yeah, breast and bum inplants as well (again!). The only thing I was proud of in Tomb Raider 4 was Lara's diving ability. She could run and dive, and also do a diving roll.
But this time when she jumped and grabbed onto a ledge, I yawned repetitively in return. And this time when she pulled the trigger to her Uzi or Silver Handguns I started dozing off! It just didn't seem like the same Lara I fell in love with from day one. She had changed and for the worse. Running against the clock was not as intense as it normally was; it was just like a walk in the park for most. Surprisingly, the thugs (bad guys) in the game got uglier and had even worse sound effets. Let's not even mention the Butler!
Then came Tomb Raider Chronicles. Once I heard of such a game being released I just couldn't believe my ears! Another one?!? But this time it was to make an arrival on the Dreamcast. Well, WOOPEEEEDOO i thought. Not! One thing that goes with each other are crap games and crap consoles. Well, the Dreamcast and TR Chronicles were the perfect match. For the second time, Eidos let a lot of fans down because the whole tomb raiding idea just wasn't of much interest anymore. I was expecting just some minor improvements in the graphics and levels, but not in the storyline. The storyline totally got out of hand and I just couldn't bare it any longer. The only good thing about this game were the cutscenes, but other than that Tomb Raider had certainly lost its tenace in my view.
It's one thing when developers let down fans of certain sequels, but it's another thing when they totally let down fans of sequels. I think what caught my eye on Lara apart from her distinguished figure bouncing around on the screen was her inexperience in the game industry. I tried and tested her and I loved her! But then a couple of sequels later, and there were only minor touches that made the game differ from Tomb Raider 2 & 3. Hearing of the new Final Fantasy 10 hitting the PS2 made me wonder if my beautiful Lara would ever return with more action and determination in her than ever before!
Lets hope.
