At the moment, the rivalry between the giants constently causes the other to improve it's hardware and software.
I think that each company should keep one or two developers JUST for their console, and all other 3rd. parties should make games for every console. In this way, people would be able to enjoy almost all the top class games, and not be completely jelous of a friends console.
An online environment for the next-gens could have a built in 'emulator' type device to alow connectivity between the consoles. Then the rivalry would still be there, benefitting us, the gamers, and also there would be a sense of equalness between the consoles, also helping us, the gamers.
Without the rivalry, companies would keep spitting out sequels, and crap ones at that, and copies of other games. The rivalry forces them to keep improving their ideas.
The recent news that Nintendo and SEga would be joining would have sounded like heaven for you gamers. But if you bring into consideration the points I have made, you would see that it is a good thing that this news has been proven wrong.
