...The same goes for console wars. It's a well known fact that console wars have become one of the biggest discussion topics in the gaming world for quite a while now, dominating topics on Mario's supremity over other gaming mascots, the cel-shaded look on Zelda and the fact that Turok: Evolution is multi-format. So why is this topic of discussion loved by some and hated by others?

The easiest way of looking at it is like this. There's always a new argument created when a game looks fancier on one console than another, despite the potential power differences in each console. People assume that games use the full power of each console, thus the version with the worst perfomance obviously makes that console the worst. Sure, this may be the case, but quite often it is not, and is often done to cause such heated discussions by gamers. Why? Because it sells games!

To us, the gamers, it helps us realise where our loyalties stand. Am I mainly a 'Ninty', a 'Sonyphile' or am I a follower of pure evil (X-box fan)? It also helps others realise this about us too, which causes us to use each other's loyalties against us, keeping things going between the lines of gaming and keeping the industry popular. Without discussion, I'm sure many people who enjoy gaming right now, would not have started playing with their magic boxes on their televisions.

To the developers of consoles, games and in some cases peripherals, it is free advertising. The gaming world seems quiet at the moment, why not start a rumour to get people interested in our wares? Maybe that's what Rareware are doing right now, especially since they haven't announced anything new recently. When people are always talking about consoles, they are spreading the word, whether conciously or not, others will have this in mind and maybe purchase the console they favoured in the argument.

What suprises me is how people can turn to newbies on these forums and tell them that 'Console Wars' topics aren't relevant anymore, the 'wars' are over and that no one is interested, when quite clearly, as evident in this forum, they wars are as popular as ever before. Sure some people may not be interested like they used to, but others are, and arguing their points (though many appear to be mis-informed individuals who do now know what they are talking about).

Ok, I take the points of some members here when they say they're not interested in the 'Console Wars' topics. Some people clearly aren't bothered at all about what others are saying about each console, and just want to concentrate on gaming, which is a perfectly fine way to look at it. Usually it IS the same old rubbish being repeated each time in each topic, but occasionally there is a new point and it's fun to back it up or disprove it depending on factual knowledge and/or opinion.

I personally enjoy console wars, they are fun to engage in, and are a kind of controlled argument where no one usually takes things too seriously, but has some pleasure in proving another wrong, until they are also proved wrong. It's a chance to talk about my favourite interest, usually with a load of people below the same [gaming] knowledge levels as me, thus I tend to get the upper hand in those topics. It is also intriguing in the way that I can find out what others think of certain aspects of gaming without starting new topic after topic and getting a reputation as a spammer.

Anyway, whichever console your loyalties (if you have any) lie, whether you're an X-box, GameCube, Playstation 2, PC or even a Dreamcast fan, enjoy gaming and argue to your heart's content.

Yeah. It all started when newbies would always post the same first topic:
"The Console War".

That was slated because it was so damn generic.

But, it soon led on to "Why are you arguing about which one's best. They're all good! Grow up!".

That's annoying. We can argue if we want too. It's fun and interesting.
FoG Prime has been so much more alive since Turbonutter stirred things up with that "blind Ninty monkeys" topic. :-D

As Shigsy would say "It is all part of the gaming experience" Talking about games and waiting for them are almost as good as getting them.

And lets face it, if there were no console wars i wouldn't be having nearly as much fun.
