A long time ago in an industry far far away...

*****1995: A NEW HOPE*****

It is a time of great depression for the bedroom alliance. The most talented have sold out to the dark side- an order of publishers intent on creating swarms of sequels and poor licensed games. The remaining members of the coding hierarchy have been left bewildered by the increasing power of the current spec of consoles. The order of the bedroom coder seems doomed.

However, all is not lost. A member of the dark order, seeing the light in the ways of the bedroom coder, has decided to reinvigorate the dying trade. The member is Sony: the reinvigoration under the name of Yaroze.

Armed with their new weapon, the bedroom coders could once again set about in creating originality and creativity in the industry. Their games, forged from the tools of Sony, were distributed to the public via the web and magazines, and the industry returned to harmony once more.

*****2000: THE INDUSTRY STRIKES BACK*****

It is a worrying time for the bedroom alliance. With the success of the campaign against the PS1 the industry begins to clamp down on the bedroom alliance. Sony, almighty leader of the industry, announces that Yaroze will be replaced by a far inferior program called Yabasic. This leaves the alliance with no other option but to reverse engineer Sony’s mammoth hardware- something that is too great a task.

The only option for the alliance comes in the form of the Dreamcast. Simple to reverse engineer and familiar to program, this unpopular machine becomes the console of choice for the alliance. But without the support of magazines and proper development tools, their quest is halted. The bedroom coders once again take to the underground.

*****2002: THE RETURN OF THE CODER*****

After years of hardship, the alliance is finally seeing progress. A sole hero from the old bedroom alliance returns fresh from isolation with a new weapon for the alliance- Linux. With this tool the coding elite can finally begin to attack Sony’s monstrous hardware, developing in a language familiar to them.

A rejuvination of the bedroom alliance follows, with their works being embraced by the public once more. A return to order has begun….

I'll reply... maybe it'll make Sonic like me, cos he's a notable, and if notables like me good stuff will happen!

;-)

Anyway, nice post, good history of the bedroom coder through the years of consoles... but you missed out stuff about the PC etc. (Quake games, Half-Life and worldcraft, the massive map and mod trade of online games etc. etc.)

Anyway... nice story. Shame about the Star Wars references though :D
