It was these words that he scribbled on every letter, each one he added something extra, something personal. A final touch. At the bottom he left a number. He sat by the phone for days waiting. For what? Well to understand that we must go back 3 months, four days and 3 hours 31 minutes to the moment he was told.
"You have cancer, and not long to live, perhaps 3 months at most. I'm sorry"
With those words he looked blankly at the doctor and then left. He tried to tell those close to him but could never find the words, his girlfriends was the one he wanted to tell most but instead found it easier to hurt her and cause her pain, that way it wouldn't hurt her as much as when he left for good. Well at least that was the way he wanted it to be.
Now he had realised, every person he hurt, everyone who cared may still care as much as he cares for them. They should have the right to know, they should have the chance to say goodbye, the letters he sent where his way of changing things.
He sat waiting by the phone, looking at it each day, to affraid to leave the house incase it rang. Which it did. The first one was Steve, his best friend for so many years who wanted to understand exactly what the letter meant. After being told he broke down into tears. "I'll come round tomorrow with the guys, is that ok?"
"Yes, try get Anna, I need her to know that I was so wrong. Please."
"I'll try, see you soon."
"Bye"
He slept in the chair by the phone all night, it was getting worse, real bad and the pain was getting to much to take. He had refused treatment, it was his time to go and he had excepted that. The doorbell rang, it was unlocked and Anna appeared.
She helped him over to his bed and he lay down. She didn't say much but he knew the smile meant something, she still cared.
"I think it's time" he said.
She began to cry as she kissed his lips. She held his hand and looked at her.
"I lo.....love you and always will" he said just as his head fell back and his eyes closed. She whispered in his ear "I'll love you forever too"and then he was taken from her. He had gone.
The doorbell rang again, the guys all looked at Anna and knew what had happened.
At the funeral a few days later the crowd of friends stood around the cofin, those who cared and had the power to forgive. Each brandishing an envelope which each in turn placed in the cofin.
Letters of forgiveness, letters of love and letters of friendship. He would take them with him.
