Now, this is unconfirmed but if it’s true then Sonic Team, sort it out: either release the game on all 3 consoles or only on a single console. I'd prefer the latter option but if needs dictate a multi-format release at least make it a proper one. Maybe it's down to a combination of resources available to them. Everyone keeps going on about the ease of programming the X-Box and GC. PS2 takes a little more effort to make it really shine (apparently). Coding is only a very small part of game development remember. Maybe they don’t think that the PS2 will be a viable platform by the time SA3 is released. Once you’re building for multiple platforms you have to sacrifice some things anyway (graphics/non-portable graphics or coding techniques). Most of the code is directly transferable between platforms and the rest will be hidden behind fixed interfaces. Maybe Sonic Team thinks it's not worth the extra effort. More likely a little bit of commercial fan-boyism showing through.
Perhaps it’s financially safer? Considering the PS2 fanbase is bigger than the GC and X-Box fanbase combined, I doubt it’s a financial decision. And I remember when Sonic Adventure 2 came out; didn’t Sega say that the GC was the most suitable console for the Sonic franchise? At the rate Sega are moving their games towards the X-Box its only a matter of time before they are making games for it exclusively. That's a fairly simplistic line to take. Let’s read between the lines. Where have DC owners gone to in this strange time? X-Box and GC mainly. Was SA enough to coax people away from PS2? No, it wasn't. I have a sneaking suspicion that Sonic on PS2 would be a non-event. Can we prove that? Of course not, but it's widely assumed that most DC owners have serious issues towards Sony and their wares, the silly sods. Is this just the owners who didn’t have a PS2? If Sonic Adventure 3 was released on the PS2 it would sell well, and make a profit, so how does it financially benefit them to not develop it? They should whither develop a game for one console or all of them. I am quite happy for them to develop exclusive games for each console, but I don’t like this current trend to start porting them. If it is developed on 1 platform it can be developed to take advantage of the strengths of that platform. There is a large increase in the effort involved to develop for 2 platforms simultaneously. However for any additional platforms the work involved is constant and small.
I’d say most Sega owners have gone for the PS2, I mean, I don’t think they’ll be risking their cash again. I don’t know any Sega fanboys with Xbox all jumped onto the PS2 bandwagon. What we should be discussing is the fact that they will be retaining the multiple character aspect! I only want Knuckles, (not games style though) Sonic and Shadow - the rest can go to hell! Also, more concentration on speed and platforming! Sonic Adventure 2 was a load of bull! It’s a good thing I never bought the DC version, and played the GC counterpart around a mate’s house. If they are going to keep the flaws of Sonic 2, then I’m not buying! Sonic doesn’t suit 3D, they should just make him 2.5d or let him die in gaming obscurity where he can experience the pain he has put us through...and take that Jake kid who does the voice of tails (he was my favorite until they gave him a voice!)! Maybe they should make it PS2 and Xbox, as on GC he is hopelessly outclassed! One thing the GC will not need is an average 3D platformer. I am saying that releasing SA3 on PS2 would be a mistake, because it wouldn't sell. The costs of distribution, advertising, not to mention the costs of development would far outweigh the profits earned. I do have a PS2 and would love to see Sonic 3 on it, but I don’t think it would sell all that well on PS2, sure people who love Sega will buy it, but that’s about it. Sega's games have sold quite well on Xbox and GC so it would make sense to bring Sonic 3 out on these systems, I would still love to see Sonic 3 on PS2 but I don’t think this is doing to happen, I hope I’m wrong.
I would expect any further Sonic games to be GC exclusive, at least for a period. Sonic Adventure 2 has been surprisingly successful on the GC - even more so than the Dreamcast, I suspect. In terms of console wars, YES, the Playstation did sell more than the Saturn but I don't think it's right to assume that Sony drove Sega into bankruptcy. True, the stiff competition does have some degree of blame but come on; you can't blame Sega's demise solely on Sony. IMO, the DC was a great console (still is). It was host to loads of great games (even on PAL!) was easy to develop for and brought innovations to the console market (online play, VMU - yeah, I know the pocketstation came out first, but I mean using the VMU during play e.g. Life status in Resident Evil) but at the end of the day Sega did themselves no favors in marketing the Saturn or the DC. Had Sega put a little more money and effort into marketing I think the DC would still be around today and contending well with the other 3 competitors. Again, like Wario, we underestimate the selling power of a brand name. If the port of Sonic 2 sold a million on the GameCube, I dare say it could have sold close to double on PS2. Then again, I do feel GameCube makes a more suited home for Sonic. Oh, and I love Sega just as much as the next fanboy, and yet I avoided Sonic Adventure 2 after the 'okay' reviews it got. Just think how well a good Sonic game could sell.
On a totally different level, I don’t care what format Sonic Team release their games on. That’s up to them, they’re the creative and I assume that they have a good reason for choosing/losing a format depending on the title they are creating. The moment people start laying into them and demanding X title on Y platform or Z title (for example) with no cell shading is the moment when the creators lose a fraction more of their love for the industry. Sega should either release Sonic 3 on a single platform or on all 3.

*Sonic will probably appear in Mario Kart
*PSO will be the first online game on the console
*Sega are the ones driving the development of the GC online network
It supprises me that they've said that the Xbox will get SA3 as well. Certainly the GC would probably make the most money thanks to the captive young audience, but I don't see what the Xbox demographic has to offer. All I can think of is that the game will be online... and the Xbox has a modem already.
