Thus there will be a market for “downloadable” episodes, games which have the production values of major blockbusters. Let me explain.
Take the film Alien, now this is a great film but imagine if it had become a game instead. So what we now have is the original plot, concept and characters and the basis for a fantastic episode-game. The first few hours of the game would see the player control Ripley (or Parker etc) from the moment they awake from Deep sleep (a perfect moment to introduce the controls, as people awaking form deep sleep will be uncoordinated anyway) to the picking up of the Alien transmission etc etc, very atmospheric. Then following the infamous scene the player is thrown into constantly surprising and challenging situations (obviously this is all new to the player as the film was never made), in which they are tested to their fullest. Can you imagine how perfect The Matrix would have been for this concept, the list is endless.
I can see about 6-8 hours of intense gameplay in that episode alone. So for a fair price, lets say £5, someone can download this episode and play. Then when they have finished they might choose to move onto the next one; Police Academy 17: You have to be fecking joking because we ain’t.
You get my drift.
Games would take on a new dimension as plot, characters and interaction with the gaming environment would improve drastically when “concentrated” into a 5-10 hour format.
Well in my humble opinion anyway.
And as for total net availablity, the problem here is control. If a game is available from a download source, all it takes is one person to put that file into his Kazaa shared folder, and le poof, the game is ripped, pirated, and making a loss.
So, I can see that going forward, we'll have games that give us a deeper experience, much like a good movie, but we can see this happening already, and as for "episodic", so many PC games have add-on packs, it's unreal.
Basically, what you're thinking of, we don't have to wait for, it's already here.
Welcome to the future.
