Every since the early days of when Street Fighter II was the no.1 beat-'em-up fighting game around, developers have always been trying to take these games further, making each new creation that bit better than the last.

They've done this quite well I believe.
Now you can fight with Swords and Blades in the Soul Calibur games, and it's all thanks to Namco. You can also have an all-round massive Nintendo Melée with upto 4 other human players and a wide variety of individual character moves and attacks. But I still believe there are types of fighting games we are yet to see succeed at the highest level - and we are stilll even yet to see many types!

One thing i've always thought would make a great game is a beat-'em-up focused around the Martial Art Kung-Fu.
After all, can you name me just ONE game that has been based on Kung-Fu entirely, AND proven to be a big success amongst gamers world-wide!
Exactly - you can't!
So as far as I know, and as far as you know, there has been no such game to date.

So you can see already how my idea would be more than a good one, with no competition it'd already be the best in that category.
Fighting not only appeals to older people but it also appeals to the younger ones too. I remember how I always want to learn to fight and do Kung-Fu properly after watching something like the Power Rangers - which was one of my favourite shows as a young kid.
Thanks to fighting and violence on TV, you can see already how a Kung-Fu style fighting game would instantly become a hit amonmgst kids.

Another example of a strong influence that'd make people buy this game is a film like The Matrix. Everyone's seen that film, and it has been highly regarded as one of the best films EVER - if not no.1 itself!
Fans of The Matrix have already commented on how 'cool' and 'amazing' the Kung-Fu scenes are in that film, and a game based around that part only - possibly also titled "I know Kung-Fu" with all the characters against each other - could quite easily be a hit game alone.
We all know there's a Matrix game coming out for the X-box sometime and that 2 sequels to this film will also be on their way in the near future.
Wether any games based on these films will or won't have Kung-Fu fighting in them is still unknown today. So the chances of seeing a Kung-Fu game in this next-generation of gaming seem very slim already!

There are a very small amount of games that have included some areas that allowed you to 'show your stuff' and earn the Black Belt. And if Kung-Fu is in a game, it'll only be for a small percentage of the game - maybe even less than 10%! We need more Kung-Fu on our home consoles! There used to be one or two Arcade games based around it, but they weren't all good compared to the standards and expectations of today.

So, let's look at how a games based solely arouns Kung-Fu could work out:
First of all, you'd have to select your character. Obviously, you'd get the chance to name him like yourself as this is the guy that you will be training or taking through the ranks to get to the top.
Like I just said, all athletes and sports players need to focus, work and hard and train hard to reach their full-potential and come out ontop. This game could take you right through every stage - RPG style. You could go from the basics like Self Defence and learning to Focus, all the way upto knowing everything your Sensei knows - who could even be Mr.Miyagi making a guest appearence and instantly getting the attention!
Maybe Miyagi could even be a Secret or Hidden Character who you can unlock to play as once you've beaten all opponents in the fair competition.
I also suppose you could simply take the Karate Kid films and turn them straght into games. But that could destroy the high-expectations of the fans who loved the films - after all, we all know how 'well' film2game conversions often work!

Going back to the game itelf....
As you get further and further into your training, you could earn a different level of Kung-F - also RPG-style, and also like the different coloured belts you earn in Karate.
How well and hard you have trained will decide on how well you do in the real tournaments. If you have very little knowledge of this Martial Art then you are more likely to face defest early-on to a more experienced competitor. Howevever with more experience and vast knowledge, you would stand a much better chance of doing very well - and maybe even going all the way to win the tournament, and the respect of other great Martial Artists and please your Sensei!

With one tournament out of the way and the highest award achieved, you could then be entered into more and more tournaments nation and world-wide - where you'd be facing a wider variety of fighters with styles that are new and surprising to you, ones which you would also be able to learn yourself.
While you're travelling the globe, as any expert artist knows, you must keep good care of both your physical and mental health. So in order to stay in good shape, you'd have to eat healthily and practice and train hard in good preparation time before the tournament or next match begins.
And so that your mind stays calm and relaxed, you may have to try such things as Meditation and Origami where you trim Banzai Trees.
Features like this where you really do become the fighter and do have to act well in the real world could make this a very popular RPG-style Kung-Fu game.

So, what do you think of my idea???
Do you agree that we need more Kung-Fu style fighting games or not??
If not RPG-style, how else would you make this game??
What about the formats - I think this could be a multi-format hit!

I'm sure developers could make a game where you play it all slower than it's normal pace, and you watch your combos/moves straight after in a stylish replay - maybe even Bullet Time style.
But I know what you mean about the pace being a problem - that would be a real challenge to gamers.

Or, maybe they could just play it at the speed of a game like Tekken?
I'm also pretty sure that any developers would be able to solve the screen-length problem quite easily. Maybe they could have it so that when one fighter moves, the other follows - and they move along the growing area.

And maybe they could make the simpler blocks more effective - so that gamers don't have to try and struggle with the more complex defensive moves?

Thanks for the reply in the 'morgue' of a forum by the way. :)
And yes, a VR version is a great idea - but not too good for any people or objects around you that you can't see! :S

the problem with a Kung-fu game, is that REAL kung fu is incredibly fast paced, and close quartered. none of this running the length of the screen to do a telegraphed roundhouse kick that can be seen from miles off. Plus the blocking system is incredibly complex, and I although the programming capacity may exist to create such a game, it would be difficult to play, and probably impossible to master.

Unless it was played on VR, via direct uplink to the brain... NOW THERE'S AN IDEA...
