I used to spend hours, days, weeks in arcades in Central London. In the 16-bit SNES/Megadrive days, a big shiny arcade machine was SO cool. But now, anyone can get the smartest gaming setup relatively easily. Just based around a PS2, any living room can offer that gameplay paradise.
1)RACING REALISM
For £100 you can get Gran Turismo 3, a Logitech force feed-back steering wheel and a suitable table/stand from Argos/car-boot sale. Hey presto! The ultimate arcade style super realistic racing action. And once you've got that steering-wheel setup, the driving world is your car oyster. Burnout... ooh, V Rally 3... ah, and Stuntman... Stuntman with a steering wheel will be the coolest ever thing ever.
2)FIGHTING FRACKAR
In my humble opinion, you really need Arcade sticks to bring out the best in a beat 'em up. And any beat 'em up is best in 2 player. So you need 2 arcade sticks really... it can be a bit pricey, but it will save you knackering your joypads with frantic button bashing, so it's still a worthy investment. My advice is to buy yourself a nice new one, and then look out for a second hand one that your mates can use (or even get them to chip in!). I found an old PSone arcade stick that works nicely on the PS2, and bought a nice fresh logic 3 PS2 job as well. Trust me, if your a fan of Capcom vs SNK 2, Guilty Gear x, VF4, or Tekken 4 then arcade sticks will be a revelation.
3)SHARP SHOOTING SHENANIGANS
Unlike fighting and racing games, light gun games are only worth playing if you're ready equipped with some snazzy GCons. I'm yet to make this indulgence yet, but with a PS2 there's a steady growing collection of titles to be had. I'm looking forward to trying Time Crisis 2, Endgame, Zombie Night, Dino Crisis and all that. And I want to find a gun with recoil too. Ah, the stuff of daydreams.
4)MULTITAPPAGE
I'm still reeling in disbelief that the PS2 didn't come fitted with 4 controller ports as standard, but 4 player action really is the way-to-go if you've got a big enough telly. There's plenty of decent multitap + controllers deals though (esp the SR one!), so it's a reasonable investment really. Though I fall into the trap of getting 4 mates round to play through all the 4 player games, forgetting to count myself in (Duh), and I end up writing things like these on this site. But if you let them play regularly enough, you might manage to convince them to chip in for extra controllers (if they don't bring their own). Hell, I'm not averse to being a scrounging charity case.
