And to think some people call Smash Brothers a button bashing game...

I know it doesn't have long boring drawn out button combinations like traditional beat 'em ups have, but although pulling off most moves are easy to do, using them effectively while countering/dodging 3 viscious opponents isn't so easy.

There's hundreds of skills to master, ranging from rolling, dodging to charging your smash attacks with perfect timing.

You'll soon get to grips with most of these skills and will have mastered controlling your character. But if you want to be REALLY stylish, the following particular skills are essential.

These particular skills won't win you battles (apart from Ness's PK Thunder), but they're garaunteed to earn you awe and respect from onlookers (with is what playing SSMB is often all about).

The first of these three skills is Ness's PK Thunder.
Most of you will have already mastered this from the N64 version.

Up+B sends a little bolt of energy out of Ness's head.
You steer it with the analogue stick and can home it into an enemy.
That, in itself, is weak and pathetic, annoying and unimpressive.
But when you learn to control it, and use it to hit Ness, it suddenly becomes very important.

Firstly it's important because it's Ness's third jump, and a powerful one.
Mastering using it to get back into an arena after being knocked away may seem difficult at first, but only once you get the hang of it will you last 2 seconds as Ness.

Done that? Good. Now see if you can use this beautiful move on the offensive too.
It's extremely powerful, looks impressive, requires skill and although you'll find it hard to hit an enemy, when you do, you'll do damage.

I needed this move for event 51. It was also the only way I managed to get 9 KO's on Cruel Melee.

Still, PK Thunder is old move. We saw it on the N64 AGES ago.
Although the next 2 of the 3 aren't quite as practical as the PK Thunder, there's much more fun to learn.

I didn't think Zelda was going to be so great.
Maybe because I'm sexist. Maybe because she never really fought in the Zelda games. I turned out to be VERY wrong.

Her moves are powerful, if slow, and if you DO need speed, Sheik is just a down+B tap away.

Have you tried Sheik's whip?
Press towards and hold down B to get it out.
From there, you control the whip's motion with your analogue stick.

There is one draw-back. You can't move while the whip is out, and as a result, this move isn't always so practical in an intense battle, but it's damn fun to use.

Not only can rapid waggling of the analogue stick give an opponent seriously heavy damage, it can also be used to stop projectile attacks.
If Samus/Mario/Pikachu etc decided to stand at a distance and take pot shots, just pull out the whip and deflect them.

With good mastering and timing the whip can look really impressive.
Not only that, once you've wittled up their damage, you can change back into Zelda to dose them with a final powerful blow.

Hal seem to have a thing for their female characters.
Peach might be a bit of a weakling but Zelda is probably one of the best characters around. Infact, there's only one character I'd rate as better, and she happens to be a woman too (only you might not recognise that under her red space armour...).

Samus rules.

She was brilliant in the last Smash Brothers but now she's even better.

Fast, but not so light that she flys of the screen with a slight tap.
Strong moves that don't take a year to pull off.
One of the best jumpers in the entire game and a great mix of both long range and short range attacks.

Most of them were in the original Smash brothers.
The charge up shot (great for getting a reasonably easy KO) and flame attacks (by far the best moves for wearing down the master hand) were fairly old news.

Her rolling skills are still the best and although her grapple hook is slower than some "close-range" grabs, she can use it to grab people with the hammer (and when she throws them off, while they're holing that great big thing, there's no coming back). Ofcourse, we already knew she could do that too.

The homing missiles are a neat addition to her moves set.
Not only does is mean you can fire a quick long range attack without wasting your charged up shot, it also travels in your opponents general direction, you your don't have to perfectly line up your shot.
Great for warding off foes who are too close for comfort while you're trying to charge up you beam.
Nice addition to the moves set, but nothing overly amazing.

There is one surprise I found.
Make this the third and final of my 3 skills.
I know that other characters can also do this, but Samus does it best. She was also the first one to do it back in Super Metroid in 1994.

I'm sure most of you have done it already - jumping off walls!

That's not all, though. Many characters can jump of walls, but Samus and Young Link are the only ones who can jump off walls after clinging onto them with their grapple hook/beam (and although Young Link can do it, Samus is such a better character so I'll ignor him for now! ;-)).

Try it on the UFO level.

Jump of the edge.
Pressing Z in the air sends out Samus's grapple beam.
When it catches the wall, Samus will hang from it.
The beam doesn't hold for long, so tap Z again to haul yourself up.

Then push against the wall and suddenly tap away from it and Samus will kick herself up off the wall. And you're still free to do your double/triple jump techniques to get to the top.

I know that this will rarely be practical in a proper game, but if you're trying to show off (and if there's a crowd then you damn well should be!) there's no better way.

In the gap between two sky scrapers (still on Ness's UFO level), fall down that and wall jump all the way back up. It's fun, looks impressive and will sometimes even be useful.

Still, no matter what I say about these 3 skills will show you how great they are. You have to try them for yourself!
Toying with silly/fun moves like these is what playing a game like Smash Brothers is all about. They're fun, challenging to master, and when you do get the hang of them, they're PERFECT for showing off.
What more could you ask?

Link is god, I only played in the original as the character as I loved Zelda so much by now I cannot play as anyone else as well as I play as link. Changes from last time?

1: His Up B spin attack now features 3 hits.

2: His hookshot is no where near as good.

3: Bow and Arrow addition.

4: C buttons slashes.

Right Up B when performed correctly is killer.

The down B after jumping on your opponent if it hits is soooo powerful, the bombs are very powerful.

Link has sword fighting abilities, 3 different progectile oppertunities, is fast, has many ways of knocking opponents off and relativly fast....

That is what i choose Link.

I've not played much of Virtua Fighter 4 but I've seen enough to know that it's in the same style as other "realistic" fighters such as Tekken.

A bit too restrictive in movement to let you show off in the same way you can in Smash Brothers.

In Smash brothers, there's more freedom to move around and more scope to fight your own way at your own pace. Still, each to their own I suppose.

In reply to Whitestripes, Mewtwo is indeed powerful and has some pretty devastating moves as well as some snealy techniques like that down+B stun.

He's a little bit too slow and cumbersome for my liking though, and that's why I'd rank Samus (and Zelda when she morphs into Sheik) above him.

Having said that, I've not taken much time to try and master him.

how can you compare Virtua Fighter, a semi serious fighter with SSBM?? Thats ridiculous, i mean you think pickachu fighting DK is serious?

I'm sorry but in terms of style and showing off, Vitua Fighter is so much better than Smash Bros.

A perfect example is a fight I had with my 10 year old cousin last night:

I was the Shaolin monk dude (Lei Fei) and he was Kage. The match started and I did a rather stylish combo which ended with a jumping spin kick, sending him spinning to the ground. I then assumed a special "evasion" stance and waited for his attack. He sprung to his feet and threw a punch. As soon as I saw it coming I pressed back and square (perfect timing!). I stepped backwards and grabbed his arm, then with a quick flick of the analog stick and X, I spun my elbow round and caught him in the back of the head. Down he goes again. I stomp in his head in an incredibly stylish way. Then he gets to his feet again and does a high side kick. Completely by chance, I did a low sweep kick which sent him once more to the floor (spinning I might add). I went for a second stomp but he rolled out the way and flipped to his feet. Then he threw a punch which I sneakily evaded, and then did a throw. The throw which I did was the one from the side (which happens to be the most stylish throw in the game). I grabbed his arm, and brought my foot across his feet, taking them out so he did a flip forward (hard to explain). That was it and he was out cold.

The best thing about VF4 though is that you can record entire replays of fights. After this fight I put my pad down to do a celebratory dance. Luckily, I just managed to click select in time to save it. Then I showed it to him repeatedly while immitating the guy off the old N64 F-Zero/F1 adverts.

"Let's see that again!!"

Please note that most of the events of this match where by complete fluke and I could never do it again. Of course, I never told him that. Never do you admit to an opponent that you did that amazing move by chance. It's always your skill! Then if they fall into the trap of asking you how you did it, make up a button combination. When they attempt it, it won't work and at this point you say:

"Ahhh well, there is only one daddy after all."

:-D

Hell yeah, I used that Jigglypuff move to win event 51. Plus it's great kicking your mates ar*e with lil' Jigglypuff. And Mewtwo rules for one on one combat.
Get fairly close to your opponent and hit them with a confusion attack, this will leave them facing the opposite direction to you, as soon as they turn round (which they're gonna have to to hit you back) hit down + b to get them with disable, they are now totally immobile for about 3-4 seconds. Now you can use Mewtwos powerful throw move or anything you like! Shadowball is the same as Samus' charge shot and once fully charged can be saved to use whenever you like, plus it's harder to dodge. If you in a tight position you can just teleport out of the way! And his dodge (shield + right/left) ir pretty quick and he'll end facing the backs of you opponent, another chance to use disable when they turn round. The only thing is I can't seem to do very well in fights with more than one person (mainly if it's a 2 on 1 or a 3 on 1) as he doesn't really have any multiple target moves. But his meator attack is powerful.
