So, what to do in my extra time? Well, of all the places I ended up last week, it had to be Fopp- a discount CD store. However, they also happen to sell old stocks of books for next to nothing. So, after browsing for the Nirvana Live album I took a quick look at the books section...
As well as the usual mix of biographies and stories of musicians and bands, an interesting looking book (yes, I judge books by their cover! The plainer the better- the content must be so good it sells itself!) called "The Day of The Triffids". I vaguely remembered hearing that the book was about suvival in a post-catastrophic even that almost wipes out the human race, so though that, for the cheap price, I'd buy it. (The fact that I was with a lady friend who I was trying to look intelligent in front of has nothing to do with it!).
And so, a week later, I've finnished what was a highly entertaining book and continued my rediscovery of the joy of books with "The Day of the Jackel". Having seen the (alsolutely brilliant) original film ("The Jackel" was a poor Bruce Willis remake where everything takes place in America), I thought I'd pick it up when I saw it in my Mom's book collection.
Well, enough blabbering by me. I'm off to get a few chapters in before I nod off. But remember, there are books out there that beat any film hands down- and you can read them anywhere anytime.
So if, like me, you'd lapsed into the high paced film/music society, just take some time to appreciate the original form of story-telling...

That is one messed up book. It really gets into your head - I couldn't sleep last night because of it. Kinda like a Requiem For A Dream, but written.
The Jackel (Willis) takes the story, replaces the subtleties (and everything good) with big guns, and moves everything to America (suprise suprise). It is truely dismal.

I've never read Day of the Jackal (or even seen all of the original film) but the Jackal with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere was truly dismal!
The Jackel is a terrible version of the original. You see, the original is based on the real life story of a man hired to kill De Gaulle in Frace. It's subtle, gripping and keeps you in suspense. The assasin is cold- he uses people to get to his goal. In a great example, he charms a woman into letting him stay at his house- a truely great romance scene. And then she's found dead in the morning....
I would really recommend the film- it's superb. I'll tell you about the book when I finnish!
*YUK!*
I've heard Day Of The Jackal is good, and the Day Of The Triffids is superb, if a little freaky.
It's much more interesting than most post-apocalypse books because it actually shows the apocalypse. Those first few chapters, in London, are chilling.
