Okay.... a few days ago, whilst trying to stop Dungein Siege from hanging when it ran, I downloaded the via4in1 4.38 drivers from http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2

When I tried to install them, I came up with a registry error, and installation aborted. I later dicovered they weren't compatable with my system (oops).

So I rebooted my computer, and noticed that I could no longer see the CD-ROM drive (It's actually a CD-rewriter, to be exact).

Assuming this was something to do with the changes to the BIOS the program warned may tgake place, I reset my BIOS to the defaults. That of course, screwed up my hard drive auto detection, but I've got that sorted again now.

Still no CD-ROm drive though. It should work, and it should at least be detected - it is definitely connected correctly. No sign of it though.

I've tried to get hold of some drivers for it, but I had no luck finding any.

Any ideas what's wrong, and what I can do about it?

Progress!

The CR-ROM is now being detected on the IDE. However, still no sign of it whatsoever in windows.

The way to see if your bios is detecting cd rom is when you start pc it goes through the memory test (when it counts up your memory) then after that it should auto detect ide devices (default setting in bios) so it should say IDE PRIMARY DEVICE and next to that it will list your hard drvie then on one of the other ide ports it should detect cdrom (depending on what port you have it on) if not then it isnt an Operating system or driver problem as your system doesnt detect it before windows is initialised, try a new ide cable or reseating current one, make sure power is going to drive and in the bios make sure you have all ide channels set to auto detect.

Presumably, even if the installation of the Via drivers was aborted, then things got quite messed up. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers for your actual motherboard chipset? That'd be the first thing I'd try.

Win 98 2nd edition.

No sign of it in the bootup sequence as far as I can tell, or the BIOS for that matter - though it's unclear where it would actually be in the BIOS settings if it were working
