That's a quote from the news after england's 'historic' win over argentina.
Sure, great result against one of the best national sides in the world, but if i was here to talk about that, i'd be in the sport forum.
It's the general attitude of not just the media, but also the general public that's caught my attention in the last couple of days - the belief that there's more to the football match than just an important game in a team's bid to progress in the world cup, that there's something bigger between the two nations.
I'm sure everyone will have seen media attention demonstrating this attitude, phrases like 'the old enemy' have been littered through newspapers and i don't think anyone could disagree that the public seem to have willingly been swept along with it.
But why?
Well, this 'old rivalry', on the football pitch at least, stretches back less than 20 years, to maradonna's 'hand of god' dumping england out of another world cup - before then, england had never lost to argentina, probably fair to say that nobody really cared any more than about any other side.
Then there was the last world cup - becks made his infamous 'mistake', but that wasn't really much to do with argentina, you can question the ethics of certain tactics, but there was really nothing worse than you'd see from countless other sides in the right circumstances.
And that's about it for one of the oldest rivalries in sporting history.
Oh yeah, and there's the falklands.
Now, my theory goes something like this - the english public consider germany 'the old enemy' - a number of previous football encounters, which for the most part see england coming off second best. Then germany get rubbish. Well, they're far weaker than in the past. A big victory (5-1) clears english feelings of inadequacy, but we're all so mentally messed up that we need to find new 'baddies' to conquer. A war, the 'hand of god' thing and they happened to be there when england's current captain was going through a rough patch, step up the new victims of our hatred, argentina!
So what the hell is wrong with everyone? Why is everyone in this country so messed up that we lose sight of what is just a football match? It's nothing to do with the falklands, and little to do with the few bits of significant football history between the two teams. At the risk of being clichéd, it's just a game.
In my view, the attitude taken on mass to argentina shows only our pathetic need to corrupt a game with our misplaced need to hate and conlict.
A day that should be a cause for pride in the achievements of our football team has been turned into yet another reason to feel ashamed of this 'sceptered isle'.
