Internet firm could shut down service
Millions of British internet users could face a huge slowdown in service next week.
The owners of Europe's biggest data network are threatening to shut down their system as early as Monday.
Dutch firm KPNQwest, which handles almost half of Europe's internet traffic, went bankrupt last week.
Now administrators say the network will be closed unless creditors pay all their debts by Monday.
Freeserve and AOL, Britain's two biggest internet service providers, both use KPNQwest's network.
KPNQwest, a joint venture between Holland's Royal KPN and Qwest Communications International of the US, sacked 350 employees earlier this week.
It has since re-hired around 70 engineers to keep the network going while efforts are made to find a buyer.
But the engineers, who include a dozen Britons, have been told not to touch the system if it is shut down.
One told The Sun: "People are underestimating how big an impact this will have.
"About 40% to 50% of European internet traffic will go into a black hole."
I'm on NTL too. Hopefully it won't affect us, but it could have a knock-on effect.

Well, I was just stating that as an NTL user I won't be effected, but NTL have been compared to black holes before...
I use AOL. Looks like I'll be stuffed as of next week then.

Are you suggesting that NTL are a black hole that swallows 40-50% of European internet traffic?
