The two main positions which are in question is the right back, left midfield and Support Striker for Owen problems.

Here is my answer...

Why not play Dyer at right back?

He used to play in that position at ipswitch and at the start of his Newcastle Career, we can then switch Hargreeves to the left wing, bring in Nicky Butt in the Middle to cut out the swift Argentinian counter attacks and bring in Sheringham to open up the stubborn defence that they have, im sure owen would compliment the intelligent through balls, If the midfiield is being exploited too much, Sheringham can tuck into the midfield to make a 5 and hargreeves can also tuck in from the left.

The Man Utd Connections may also allow more fluent passibng and movement through the middle of the park and up to Sheringham who knows Becks & Scholes runs inside out.

My team to face Argentina:

Seaman

Dyer Rio Cambell Cole

Becks Butt Scholes Hargreeves

Sheringham

Owen

Then when the Argentinians get tired bring on Vassel to give them something different to contend with.

I really can't see a problem with this team its balanced and flexible, what do you reckon?

Danny Mills is going to be th donkey of WC2002.

Every major competition creates one or two. Mills is crap, and shouldn't be in the side at all, much less a definite starter.

I predict a 2-0 defeat for england now. It won't be any worse because the Argies will try to keep a clean sheet and will defend their lead.

Yeh Indeed, he was great in his early days for England playing at right back, and thta is something I thought may help England, a burst of pace from the back.

It seems that Danny mills is to continue with butt coming in the middle and scholes playin out wide and heskey upfront.

I hope it works. Looks like dyer will be a substitute.

Sigh.

I think it will be 2-2, or hoping.

I've been wondering for ages about what's happened to Dyer the right-back.

I remember his debut against Luxembourg there was he was amazing!
He got into the box loads, set up goals, and even earnt us a Penalty.
Unfortunately though, he didn't manage to score.

He's fine on the attacking side but it's his defensive game that starts to concern his managers.
He hasn't played consistantly there for Newcastle, but he did do it quite a bit at Ipswich - AGES ago!

I still think he should get a chance though.
Maybe he could come on late for Mills to give us an extra life-line??

Calm down Ashley Lad, it only a discussion, no point shaving you chest for it is there?

He may have played there for bayern but this is the national team and Sven has never played him at right back with Rio Sol and Cole has he?

Thats why I said "you cant throw him in there in such a big game"

and im so sorry I spelt his name wrong I didn't know you had that strong feelings about him? :D

>why not play nigel martyn at centre forward as that was the position he ?>was signed as
> before he tried goalkeeping. I can't wait for france to start playing
> Thierry Henry as right back as that is where he played for juventus.

and these comments are just stupid. If you get your facts right, you will se that I was talkin about how they play nationally not how they played before they started playing or ages ago at their clubs. Dyer has played at right back before for England and I only meant it for one game not for the rest of his bloody life.

He has covered there for Bayern you obviously are a hypocrite and have never watched a foreign match otherwise you would not suggest hargreaves on the left and then say in the following sentence that you can't just throw a player position he's never played into a major game. He has covered there for Bayern and they are a bigger team than newcastle or Ipswich. It is a far more reasonale suggestion than playing him on the left of midfield a notoriously difficult position when he has only started 2 matches for england. Hargreaves was the intended right back anyway after neville got injured as steven gerrard was still fit to play as the centre midfield. If Dyer has been chosen to play left wing for england in the future then its probably best he plays in that position and gets good at it rather than change the left winger evergame! Imagine if we didn't have Beckham. Where would dyer be playing Right midfield. Why is this I think to myself. A)he is pacey an excellent passer and crosser and B) can score goals. It sounds like a great idea to waste his talent at right back, when we have much better tacklers. He is an attacking player, your arguement that he played there for ipswich sometimes doesn't stand as hargreaves is a much better tackler and while we are at it why not play nigel martyn at centre forward as that was the position he was signed as before he tried goalkeeping. I can't wait for france to start playing Thierry Henry as right back as that is where he played for juventus.

oh and his name is Hargreaves its not exactly hard to spell and he is in the england team its not like he plays left back for saudi arabia or something.

I suggest you broaden your horizons and become better informed before you start trying to criticise.

Playing 3 at the back was what we did against the Argies last time wasn't it? I say 3-5-2.

Seaman

Ferdinand
Campbell
Southgate

A.Cole
Dyer

Beckham
Butt
Scholes

Owen
Sheringham

Hargreeves at Right Back?!

Yeh like he's ever played for England in that role before? you can't just throw in a player at a position he's never played into a major game just cause he's defensive, if anything he can maybe play wingback on the left in a 3-5-2 formation as ortega says, but not right back.

To sort that out they could just play with 3 central defenders and play Cole/Hargreaves as wing backs.

Ya gonna need fit mans on both sides of the pitch to cope with Zanetti and Sorin. 3 central defenders will also be needed to cope with the 3 man Argentine attack.

Although this is unlikely as Sven has never used it, but Hoddle used it against Argentina last time and worked pretty good for him...

Either Way I say Argentina will dominate this one...Unless Sheringham plays...

that is a pretty awful idea. Wy not play dyer on the left instead of hargreaves as he is the attacking player and but hargreave right back as he is the defensive player who has played there before.
