Have you ever played through a game, finished it and then found that there’s not much else worth coming back to it for?
Wouldn’t it be cool if more games featured the ability to play the game or a bonus game from an alternate perspective as well as the main game?
What got me thinking about this idea is the ability to play as TIE-Fighters or even Darth Vader’s TIE in Rogue Leader. Playing as the baddies gives us a nice spin on the game, and it’s interesting to achieve different objectives by defeating those blasted rebels. But it’s not the idea of playing as baddies, you could also play through the game as the sidekick, or another observer.

Add-on packs are becoming more frequent nowadays, especially for the PC, and have great potential for showing the other side/s of a story. Operation Flashpoint is a great example, where expansion packs come out and tell a different side of the ‘cold war conflict’—from the perspective of the US, who are perceived as the good guys, the baddie Russians and soon the civilians in ‘Resistance’. These add-on packs are great for showing the conflict in a different light, for when you are the Russians, not only do you have different weapons and vehicles etc, but also you feel like you are controlling the goodies, when in fact, you’re still the enemy. Even though you are the enemy in the ‘Red Hammer’ add-on, you see the emotions in the Russian soldiers, something that you didn’t think about when you were controlling the US forces in the previous game. The Russians then become more human to you, and you realise that even the enemy have emotions in the heat of the battle.
I’m looking forward to the latest add-on pack, as seeing the battle from the perspective of civilian freedom fighters will complement the action nicely, and will put a different slant on the action as we see how the normal people feel about the conflict and how they cope with it compared to troops.

Half-Life has Blue Shift where the player takes control of Barney the security guard, and Opposing Forces where you were a soldier trying to catch Gordon Freeman, two great expansion packs showing other view points of the Black Mesa incident. These add-on packs are filled with cool little incidental moments like when Barney talks to Gordon at the beginning in Half-Life, whilst in Blue Shift, you play that bit as Barney.

The Resident Evil series is probably the best exponent of offering an alternative perspective or narrative in a game, as many of those zombie-infested adventures can be played with multiple characters. Actions done by one character changes the game the next time you play it with the other character, but it would still be nice to actually see the other character running about in the background taking out zombies and interacting more with your chosen character.
In offering two different adventures, Capcom have also given the series good replay value, as the game differs slightly and each character is competent with different weapons.

A similar thing is happening with Final Fantasy 10, as it was recently revealed that Squaresoft are working on two new games based on their epic adventure. The new games will expand on the main game, including new sections viewed from two other character's points of view, offering different perceptions on the game.

So what sort of ‘alternate perspective gaming’ would I like to see in the future??
The games could be in the form of simple bonus missions like Rogue Leader, or the ability to play through the whole game like in Opposing Forces, depending on how far the developers want to expand on their creations.
Having played some of the bonus missions in Rouge Leader made it really cool have a go at playing at the baddies, so wouldn’t it be great to play more bonus levels in games where you could control the enemy?
Perfect Dark’s multi-player mode featured the 2-player versus mode, where the second player could control the baddies, which gave a nice interesting slant on the usual 2-player co-op mode.
Wouldn’t it be nice to control a Stormtrooper or darkside Jedi in Jedi Knight 2?
Or perhaps a bounty hunter trying to follow and catch the main hero as he goes through one of the levels (like Star Wars Bounty Hunter!)
Or a bonus level on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, where you could control the evil Germans on the Omaha Beach level, trying to shoot the Allied troops on the beach.

It’s not just the baddies either, how about being the good guys in GTA3?!
You could maybe choose to play as a cop trying to catch the main ‘hero’ and other criminals? Or you could play as a gang member of a cartel, or just the chance to control a civilian and watch turf wars, and even try to follow the main character as he runs and drives around Liberty City.

Many people criticised Metal Gear Solid 2 for the fact that for the majority of the game you play as poncy haired girl, Raiden, when many people (myself included) would have liked to play as Solid Snake through the whole game. It would have been nice to have the option to play the part of Snake when he was sneaking around the Big Shell.

With many games there isn’t a great pull, making me want to replay it, but in offering different game modes like this, the replay value would be better. The actual game engine is already in place, so should developers lets us play the same game from a different perspective?
Think of your favourite games, and then imagine how different they might be if you could also play through them through another characters eyes. I think that would be pretty cool.
