On a regular bases I am told that my ADSL connection is 'IDLE' or 'NO SINGAL' from the software provided with the modem, and sure enough, if I try to connect, I don't get through.

Is this a common problem with any other ADSL users (mainly Pipex, as thats who I'm with) or should I contact Pipex/BT about this??

You only need to do it once ;~)
Might be worth leaving it overnight sometime - there's some good stuff on newsgroups.

You can use Outlook to read newsgroups but you're better off with a dedicated newsreader like Xnews ( http://xnews.newsguy.com/ ). All you need to do is give it the name of your newserver: on Pipex this is news.dsl.pipex.com and you're away. It'll take an absolute age to get the names of all the available groups - then just search for 'pipex' in the filter box.

Thanks, I'll give it a go. I did read somewhere that my Local Exchange was being upgraded this month, which was funny as ADSL is already working, so maybe they are sorting this problem :o)

Oh, and that link to support didn't work, how do I use these newsgroups, are they an Outlook/E-mail thing??

It could just be that your modem is out of sync: you could try unplugging it if its USB or rebooting if its internal. Sometimes fixes that sort of problem.

This hasn't happened to me but I think it may be due to some infrastructure thing that I've read about on both the Pipex website and their support newsgroup. Apparently some exchanges have a certain piece of outdated equipment, which stops some users being able to connect on a regular basis. BT are /apparently/ trying to fix this.

I don't know if this the problem you're having, it's just a guess. There is a very good newsgroup at pipex.xtreme.support where people will be able to offer much better advice than I'm able to. It's not generally populated by Pipex staff, so the range of solutions and knowledge is very good. There is an official group which you might also want to try.
