ISPA 2008 Winners Announced
The Internet Services Providers' Association announced at its annual awards ceremony held on 14th March 2008 who the winners were in the various categories announced earlier this year. The annual awards are based on nominations by the companies themselves which are then whittled down to a top five in each category based on performance testing by Epitiro, with the final decision made by a panel of industry experts

BT as I think you understand it no longer exists. BT is split into several divisions (mainly due to OFCOM (the telecoms regulator) pressure. Becuase BT own the main telephone network in the UK over which ADSL runs they have to actually sell their retail broadband service through their BT retail arm and have to compete on an equal platform with other ISPs that use the BT network.

BT Wholesale is in charge of the main network, BT Openreach is in charge of the connection between your house and the exchange and BT retail is in charge of selling customers services.

When a customer reports a fault to us it is BT Wholesale who we have to contact, they check the BT network for problems and send out BT Openreach engineers if the fault is between your BT master socket and somewhere in your local exchange.

If you are with BT (retail) for you broadband connection and you report a fault to them they have to go through exactly the same process.

It may seem a little silly but apparently it's to stop BT exploiting their dominant position. Afterall, competition is a good thing for you, the customer.

LLU (Local Loop Unbundled) providers add a further level of complication. They install their own equipment in the BT exchange and take over the BT line for either broadband, telephone or both for people who sign up to them.

thats a good question, several factors that in my opinion rate any ISP as all internet conections are through BT lines (except cable) then in theory all speeds should be the same no matter what ISP you are with, I am with freeola, yet if there is a fault with my conection I phone them they phone BT to sort it! so why dont I go with BT and cut out freeola? well i was with BT and in the old days with dial up they penalised heavy users by slowing there speed and using alternative dial up numbers! BAD BT then came broadband BT used to give 50MB of web space free with any account, but domains were rip off prices, then I saw the light, "Freeola" cheap domains unlimited web space great customer service - i switched and have never looked back since then many moons ago. if I call they are polite usually on first name terms nothing is to much problem for them and they are based in the UK and keeping jobs going in the UK

my father is with BT - he has a problem he phones them he gets frustrated as he cant understand the call centre, the cal centre pass him from one dept to another and after half an hour on the phone he is usually no further forward with his question! however his call is important to them :) what a long answer

Freeola has quite a high rating :)

Freeola are resellers of Entanet services.

If you have a look at this, you'll see that 6 or 7 of the top ISPs are actually Entanet resellers.
