I know it looks really nice, but how does it play ? Is it the same in the way that its still stupidly easy to score ? I would look at ISS but somethings just putting me off it. Besides a couple of mediocre reviews, the presentation seems very lacking along with a good number of dodgy names still. I want a footie game that plays well, but I also want graphics that show off the X-Box's capabilities too.
If you can wait then get Fifa 2003 for Xbox, if not then this game is amazing.
Then when you do what your supposed to, you spend ages doing certain missions to try and get higher medals, only to find your were 1 second short of the time limit, or a couple of kills short, etc. It doesn't make me want to try again, it just gets me bored with it quickly in the end because I'm doing the same mission over and over again for nothing. I can't play it at a nice slow pace and enjoy the levels because theres just too much pressure to do things quickly.
Luigi's Mansion is ok, but its too easy on normal mansion and you soon find that a high score can only be beaten on the hidden mansion mode in the end because theres so much more money in it. Unfortunately the hidden mansion is a lot more frustrating and a lot of situations come down to getting through by luck more than skill because the ghosts just come from all angles in some stupidly small rooms.
Wave Race I've had a few goes on but I just don't really like it. The water looks all great and wonderful, but it gets annoying when there really isn't that many places you can use a turbo without missing a bunch of buoys and half the time I'm left wondering where I'm supposed to go. I'd make a turn and suddenly wonder where the hell I'm supposed to go, only to find out I've missed a buoy because I didn't spin round enough in my turn. Of course with the CPU riding its perfect line as usual things get boring quick.
I played my friends copy of Monkey Ball and although it had an initial grab, it soon had some real nasty words pouring out of my mouth. You end up guiding the ball along the equivelent of a string and maybe its just my hands are too big for the Ninty controller, but I just felt really uncomfatable trying to control the ball in situations like this - not out of pressure, I just felt like I wasn't holding the controller well enough and didn't have enough grip on the analogue. The mini games made up for things - for about an hour anyway. All three mini games, bowling, golf and billiards felt much more down to luck than judgement. Practise wasn't making me any better, I found that litterally aiming anywhere and shooting without any real care was getting me just as good, if not better results than carefully trying to place shots. Basically a beginner could come along and mash someone whos played the bowling a hundred times.
Maybe the difference would show in the first game, but once Mr button basher has seen the controls, things soon even up.
I played Bloody Roar and its an ok game, nothing special though. Bit worrying when I was getting more challenge out of the stupidly small D-pad than the game though.
I look at the games coming out upto Christmas now and pretty much all of the ones I'd like to have are coming to the X-Box which I will always choose first as it will have the better versions - even if they are just graphical. Basically, I'm not having fun whatsoever on the GC, just frustration. I don't call losing my rag with games fun. Games like Halo challenge me and make me think. I like to have to consider my tactics on a problem, not work out how I'm gonna hold the controller to get a ball over a stupid guitar string.
Now no doubt this is gonna lead to me getting flamed by Ninties and overall, they can moan all they want. This is my view, a person who has bought the console, bought games on it and given it a chance. I haven't just played on a pod for 2 minutes. Overall I'm disappointed with it and I've gone back to playing my X-Box while my GC collects dust.
I'm sure there are loads of happy Ninties that are even planning to fly out to L.A and marry their GC cause its the best thing they've ever seen. But to me its far from special and I'm losing faith in the console very quickly and its gonna take a lot more than Mario wearing a supersoaker to get that faith back.
Can almost see my GC diving under my bed right now out of my sight so it can't be seen to be traded in. ;-))
My friend and I played 2 player for at least half an hour and I gathered it is a enjoyable footy game with your mates, wether or not the solo player mode is good, I can't say. It's NOT easy to score, in fact its much more difficult than in previous FIFA games. There is also a learning curve to the controls, anyone can pick up and play, but there is room for accurate passing and other tactics. The presentation and all is great, and the matches are presented just like on TV. Good atmosphere with the matches.
Graphics wise, it was good, thats the impression I got from playing it on a 14inch TV. I'm sure it would look even better on a nice widescreen. :)
After playing 2 player FIFA on the xbox, my friend and I went and saw the same game on the PS2. THe xbox version is noticably crisper and alot sharper. As you would expect of course.
