Sports games have been so damn enjoyable over the years. Whatever sport they simulated seemed to look cool and as a norm games played absolutely superb – be it football, ice hockey, basketball and cricket….oi you back there cricket is good, no really it is. Ahem. They simulate the sports quite beautifully and their multi-player potential is endless. Take brilliant titles such as Pro Evo Soccer and NHL 2002- they are both fantastic representatives of their respective sports. And don’t forget all the other titles that have graced various consoles. Remember the first FIFA? Yep it was for once the best sports title in the world. Sports games are the ones you can just pick up and have a quick blast on. And year in year out, similar versions of the same game keep coming out but somehow we don’t complain as much as we would should a fighting game or an RPG be in question.

No sports games can hardly be faltered in the fun and lifespan aspects – but what can possibly be improved. Come on we all want realistic simulations of our favourite sports but somehow developers always fall short of the mark. So without further adieu I would like to present you with the 21 things sports games are missing and should really, I mean REALLY (developers-wink wink nudge nudge) have:

1. Virtual Sports Panel- Why couldn’t we have a little discussion at the end of every match with comments from the commentators and the pundits. They could analyse the game’s high points and comment on the individual performances overall. We may be beginning to get decent commentary but surely you can do better than LMA.
2. Live look-in - Basically should your game finish early, you could get footage of the closing minutes in another match from the same day. Hear the final whistle blow and teams shake hands and hear commentators from the much talk about the game in general. They have done it with Madden in 1995 when you could view the closing seconds of a tight game-so why not now?
3. Sing-a-long – How about actual chants by the fans of the respective teams contesting the match? Pro Evo came so close with national chants being played in the background – but they were unclear and slightly off-pace. Many of us would love to hear the Master League chants of “Heyyyyyyy, Hey Baby, OHH AHH”. And how about the fans of the winning team sing really loudly with the losing team try and join in with their respective chants. And can we have more responsive crowds in the game that at least get moderately excited – Konami I am looking in your direction. Yes haven’t got much to say have ya…Thought so..
4. Long-term memory– Why don’t the commentators ever remember anything that has happened in the previous games or even earlier in the season. Why not hear something like “They have to get back yo their winning ways after that humiliating defeat at Leeds” or “They will be wanting to avenge the 3-0 defeat from earlier in the week”. It would make for such great commentating
5. Save replays – Why can we only do it on Pro Evo. Surely it isn’t that hard to include a replay save facility in any game so we can relieve those magical moments again and again – and why just the goals? We could save audacious goal attempts and fantastic last minute saves. Surely not that hard EA – Aha don’t look away now. Uhh-huh.
6. Whole replays – Ok they may be boring as hell, especially on games like GT3 and F1 2001 but they are well worth another watch. See chances that were not shown in the proper highlights and show off the 5-4 extra time win to all your mates. Maybe not the most wanted feature, but surely an enticing one.
7. Crowd Noise – Not the singing this time round. Why don’t the away team get booed and the away fans seem much quieter than the home fans. I loved times in FIFA when you were away and destroyed the team 5-0, it would suddenly go quiet and you could hardly hear any cheers. And that was 4 years ago! It is possible. This is Football 2002 showcased fans cheering when you have made a great tackle and getting behind their teams – surely we can have that in all games…
8. Half and Full time entertainment – How about some entertainment at half time – cheerleaders in American footie games and some kind of a competition for fans in our British based games. Not just the boring stat reports – we could have clowns clowning around and fireworks getting off too- could be great fun.
9. Custom Banners – Sure Smackdown JBI came pretty close with you being able to choose the signs but how about you making up entire flags and huge signs in the stadiums –like cmon you Reds or similar. You can choose what you want to see during your matches – how about some offensive comments about Italian women and the like. It would help us smile more
10. Post-match reactions – why not show the players reactions after the game? We could have one team celebrating and another storming off in anger. We could also see missiles being thrown on the pitch to spice it up a little. The announcers again can comment on the games overall feel. Why have pre-game introductions and nothing after the game?
11. Online gameplay – an obvious one really. Just play your favourite games with people all around the world and see if you can destroy some german geek with your trusted England. Could implement internet gaming leagues and tournaments and have world cup ranking systems and the like. The possibilities are endless!
12. Online highlight centre – what about a place where gamers can share experiences with other gamers and upload their beats goals and highlights. Then awards could be presented for the best goals and best build-up play. People can also meet up and discuss tactics and their teams line-ups.
13. Classic teams – only a few games have provided us with the best teams of all time –namely the Madden titles. Pro Evo had a few over the past few years but where are the rest? England of 1966, Russia of the early 60’s, or the famous Real Madrid team that dominated the European scene in the 50’s. Surely instead of having silly features developers can include more classic teams to be unlocked by doing different tasks.
14. Mid-game saves – You know what its like. You are playing a game and suddenly you really have to go out shopping or look after the neighbours kid. You can of course leave your PS2 running and run up a massive electricity bill, or you could just save the game say at half-time. F1 games have struggled without this feature since doing 70 plus laps can be a tad daunting.
15. Custom tactics – instead of being limited to 15 or so scenarios, why not have a free tactic option ala Champ Manager where you can position your players pretty much anywhere. Pro Evo offers a Position Change option but its too slow and fiddly to bother with.
16. Custom camera angles – Why are we restricted to just 5 or so camera angles – they are all naff on FIFA anyway…We should be able to set the height and angle of the camera angle of our preference or even settle with a 1st person view perspective. Also the replays need to have better angles – for example replays from the crowds point of view or the linesmen’s view of things.
17. Referees mistakes – We are all human, so why don’t the refs ever make silly mistakes. Wasn’t it cool to be able to dive in FIFA and you knew it would only work out when you have executed it well. And why don’t linesmen make mistakes about the offside decisions -after all it creates more controversy and is a topic of discussion after the match.
18. Variable weather – The effects on most games look realistic but cant the weather change mid-game. From going sunny, the rain could start drizzling and the clouds would form on the sky. And the weather should affect the gameplay as well – rain could mean slippery pitch and slow ball movement.
19. Appreciating crowds – the crowds who can distinct between a consolation goal in a 7-1 defeat and a world cup winning goal on the 93 rd minute in injury time. Surely the reaction would be slightly different, don’t ya think? Super saves and chances should be awarded with appreciative roars and misses with moans and groans.
20. The bench – How about seeing the managers and the substitutes warming up on the touchline – and not annoying little cut-scenes. Pre rendered backdrops with your players jogging along the side of the pitch and following the gameplay. You could also hear your manager shout out commands suggesting what you should be doing – going all out attack or getting all your players back in defense.

And last but most certainly least:

21. Customisation – We want to create new teams which did not make it into the final line-up. Fans will be able to play as Bristol City or Rotherham in a master league with every player customised to the tiniest detail. And let us keep up with Beckhams changing hairstyles- and let us edit the players to our hearts content. We want it, we really do.

Well this is the list of the features that we all really want to see in sports games. Hopefully with time developers will listen to our pleas and take time out of their schedules to include all these things. Feel free to contribute to this list at your will.

Thank you

22. Streakers (preferably female) It happens in real life so why not in the game?

23. Hooliganism. The dark side of sport. I'm just talking about fights breaking out between fans in the crowd, fans chucking bottles etc in football matches of high tension. Pretty realistic when you like at Seria A and La Liga. Some people say Figo didnt play at the nou camp this season for Real Madrid becasue he feared for his safety from the Barca fans (last time they pelted him with everything when he took corners). Probably never make it into a football game but we have seen much worse stuff in other genres.

On the lines of number 17, i have had the referee make mistakes on Fifa 2000. Once, the striker had a shot and it deflected off of one of my defenders and went of the pitch. Expcting the other team to be awarded a corner, i started to change player until i got the appropriate player. Once i had him, the referee blew his whistle and awarded a goal kick. I have also had players dive on Fifa 2000, which you are not supposed to be allowed or able to do on this game. It was one on one, the striker took it round me so i started to run along side of him. He played the ball a few feet infront of him making it easy for me to get the ball if i slide tackled him. I done this and clearly got the ball, after watching the replay several times. But the thing was, after i had even touched the ball, their player fell to the floor. The referee awarded a free kick and booked my player. I have to say that the referee has only made two mistakes and i have played this game so much. So refereees do make mistakes, just not very many.

Good post Triple H.
i agree with most of them but especially the one where you should be able to save all sorts of stuff doing a match and not just goals, how many times have i skillfully nut megged some one and crossed it in but then hit the post so i couldnt save it.

Some great ideas there mate, nice to see you posting again.

------------------------

I have always loved sports games, at least 6 of the games I have at present are sports and that figure will continue to rise simply because they are fun.

I think with the intrduction of ISS 2 some of the things mentioned are done up to a certain point. Firstly the sing-a-long, the crowd in this game are the most interactive ive ever seen, they do sing a long to a certain degree during matches and when away team etc scores the crowd boo and hiss and this also happens when someone scores, this bring up much more emotion than in ANY other football game, you feel a part of it like watching any live match
ISS 2 also allows you to save goal replays and has decent highlights and commentry.

Post match reactions would be good to see, like Andy Gray/Richard Keys and Kevin Keegan getting involved in a heated argument, it would be nice if we got to see some of the memories of the past just like that argument. Online gameplay is something im looking forward and I hope they sort this out soon, I think it would be great fun to play against others and show off my silky skills against you wannabes :D

Saving a game at anytime in a game is a must, I know on many occaisions where ive had to rush out in the the middle of an important match and it does get to you a bit.

in regards to the refs, they do make silly mistakes at times and more so in games like Pro Evo and ISS 2, offsides are the main aspect of this as if you look at replys of the offsides, sometimes you'll find that it wasnt offside, some of the tackles in ISS 2 are great because, if you do a late challenge on a player, the crowd start hissing and booing and you'll get replay of what happened, he also lets tackles go when they are clearly bookable offences, its all apart of the fun.

----------------------------

One thing id like to see in these games is an improvement is the crowd running onto the pitch after a cup final match and it would also be good to see managers showing commands from touchline as well as getting yellow/red card for running onto the pitch or arguying with the linesman/4th official,
it would also be nice to see players arguying more with the ref/linesman about decisions that have not gone their way, ala

All in all some very good ideas and an enjoyable read, weldone

The thing with referees mistakes on PSone games though...Since the collision detection was not brilliant thanks to the frame rate and the glitchy graphics, certain fouls may not have looked like fouls and vice versa. SInce the ball doesnt even touch the players feet in FIFAs (on PS2 even, let alone PSone) there were some weird moments. BUt I liked the diving bits of FIFA and do you remember on Road To World Cup 98 you could slide tackle the keeper at the right moment and get the ball off them just as they were kicking it? Brilliant

I saved replays in Fifa 99.

That was for the PC though, and I think the PC version was far more superior to the console versions.
