Britain is the most sport loving country in the entire world; this is mainly down to the fact that we invented most of them.
Counties like Brazil can only play football, and there bloody good at it. Britain on the other hand play most sports, and we’re better than average at all of them.
The first sport that comes into most peoples heads is “FOOTBALL”, when was the last time England won any major events…….let me think……oh yeah 1966, 46 years ago! People forget that we are Olympic champions at curling. During the Olympic games millions of people watched Rona Martyn slide a big chunk of granite down a long hall of ice. A few weeks later many people would of forgotten it had ever happened.
It was the same with Allan Baxter, he won bronze, only to be forgotten the next month; his fame did come back, although it was for the wrong reasons, he got his medal removed from him for taking a banned substance.
Just for the record we are also world champion at something else…Tiddlywinks, although I personally couldn’t give to monkeys about the piece of crap, but it is another example.
However if England only got as far as the quarterfinals in the World Cup it would be in everyone’s conversations for months afterwards.
So why do we take so much notice of football, rugby, tennis, and occasionally golf? How many people here know who came up from the British Superbikes into the World Superbikes? Not many of you will know the answer to that question, however if I ask you a question along the lines of:
Who won the Division One championship this year? Almost all of you will say the correct answer, which is Manchester City.
Even though we have a much better chance of winning in the Superbikes or Tiddlywinks and so on, we still tend to focus on football and rugby. When will the citizens of Britain realise that there are more sports than football and rugby in the world. One more sport has become popular (as I mentioned in a previous post) extreme sports, why I don’t know but I do know that I’m glad that they are.
Also try and get involved in other sports at school or in your town, try biking (this may be difficult for anyone who lives in a city), try to broaden Britain’s sporting knowledge. If we can do this we will be able to go out celebrating more victories more often.
