The first thing I’ve noticed is that they have changed the gameplay to be more like the original Warcraft games. Original Warcraft 3 was supposed to be a bit like Diablo. You have a main character refereed to as a “Hero” and you start off with a small group of people. You then walk the land on “Quests” either destroying an Orc Outpost or Killing a certain individual. You didn’t have to mine gold or wood and you didn’t have the option of building buildings. It now seems that you can build buildings and you do have to mine gold and wood. Although the number of buildings is limited and many of the levels are just you running around with a set amount of units, it seems that Blizzard have decided to go back to the original formula that so many games of this type are based on. And I don’t blame them. If something isn’t broke (although pretty used) why fix it?
Also it seems as though they have gone down the Starcraft path as well. I say this, as each race is very different from the other. Were as in the other 2 Warcraft games you had units that mirrored each other like the Paladin and the Ogre were pretty much the same. The only thing that separated them was their looks and the spells they could cast.
There are four playable races, Human Alliance, Orcish Horde, Night Elf Sentinels and the Undead Scourge. Each of these races has 3 Heroes. Each of these heroes has the ability to “level-up” as you play the game. Each time they level up they become stronger and are able to cast new spells. As well as these Heroes you have the standard set of units. Not only are the units themselves unique to that race so are the buildings and the way the collect resources.
For Example, The Human Alliance uses peasants to gather their resources very similar to the way they gather them in the first two games. But the Night Elves use Wisps to gather their resources. There main building called the “Tree of Life” first has to “Entangle” a mine then Wisps can enter. Wisps don’t take resources back to the tree of life instead they put small amounts of resources into the resource pile over a period. Also the Night Elf buildings can “uproot” themselves allowing them to move around the map (similar to the Terrain buildings in Starcraft) and they can even attack enemy units! These building can then heal themselves by eating trees. The Undead Scourge doesn’t have to build buildings instead they Summon them the same as the Protoss warp their buildings in. The Undead has a unit that collects corpses lying around called a Meat Wagon. It can then use these corpses in a number of different ways. They can be used to summon skeletons, units to heal certain units (that have the cannibal ability) and it can throw the bodies at the enemy not only causing damage but spreading disease with slowly take health off the enemy.
Each Race has it’s own way of doing common tasks with the addition of a few advantages over the other races with are too many to write about here! If you want to know more go to the Blizzard web site, www.blizzard.com
All of this information as well as the great 3D graphics used in the game makes me even more anxious to get my hands on a it. The wait for the release will be a long one indeed!
