Kieron Dyer could complete a miracle recovery in time to take part in England's World Cup opener against Sweden, according to assistant coach Steve McClaren.

Dyer, who was almost ruled out of the tournament two weeks ago, looks set to be retained in the squad when Sven-Goran Eriksson makes his final decision on his fitness at the end of this week.

He is still unlikely to start Sunday's game, especially with fellow midfielders Nicky Butt and David Beckham also short of match-fitness ahead of their expected returns from injury.

But McClaren, who revealed Owen Hargreaves' progress had also given Eriksson a selection dilemma, insisted that Dyer is making such good progress that he could yet come under consideration, presumably as a substitute.

After all, Dyer has taken part in full training for each of the past two days and while he has so far protected his knee, he has impressed the management team.

Lets hope he does make the sweden game as dyer is a major part in the england team.

He could play in the centre should anything happen to Scoles or Butt.

I agree, He could be great for England but just not on the left. That should be left to Hargreaves,Heskey,Barmby and Mcmanaman.

He's hardly played under Sven, and it the match he did have, he was unconvincing.

I'd rather he didn't play, to be honest.

Not sure Dyer should play against Sweden - both he and Becks have been out for a while and unlikely to be completely match fit. It's one thing to bring back one player, but it could be suicide playing both, especially when Hargreaves and Joe Cole have shown aptitude. The important games will be against Argentina and assuming we have some results under our belt, Nigeria when three or maybe all four teams could still be playing for a place.
